Derek Mann was manager of Chester City from January 1995 to April 1995. His appointment was something of a surprise as he had only joined the club as physio four months before. Although relegation to Division 3 was almost certain throughout his reign and he only enjoyed one win in charge, Mann enjoyed popularity for steering the club to a 2-2 draw at arch-rivals Wrexham despite having only nine men on the pitch in the second half. After resigning when suffering illness, Mann briefly stayed at the club in a behind the scenes role.[citation needed]
As a player, Mann was an apprentice with Shrewsbury Town but injury meant he was unable to make the first-team. He later joined the backroom staff at Shrewsbury, as well as Watford, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Huddersfield Town. He also had a spell in charge of Telford United.
Mann died in January 2007.
