The Department of Education is one of the departments of the South African government. It oversees the education and training system of South Africa, including schools and universities. The Department is headquartered in Sol Plaatje House, named after the author Sol Plaatje.

Prior to the first democratic elections in South Africa education was divided into numerous units which were often fragmented and inefficient.
School education was controlled by four Provincial administrations and the so-called TBVC countries controlled education there.
