Democratic Alternative (Serbia)

The Democratic Alternative (Serbian: Демократска Алтернатива or Demokratska Аlternativa) is a former political party in Serbia, founded by secession of pro-democratic members of the ruling Socialist Party of Serbia in 1997. Its President was Nebojša Čović. In the 21st century it merged into the Social Democratic Party, whom its leadership took over.

DA was a component part of the 2000-2003 Democratic Opposition of Serbia, which ran on the 23 December 2000 parliamentary election. It got 6 seats of the 176 DOS won. Nebojsa Covic became the interim Deputy Prime Minister on October 24 2000 with powers equal to the SPS interim Prime Minister Milomir Minić along with another Vice-Premier, Spasoje Krunić of SPO. On 25 January 2001 the new Government was elected in which he served as a normal Deputy Prime Minister until the new government on 18 March 2004. For short time from 12 March 2003 to 17 March 2003 Covic was the acting Premier in the wake of the assassination of Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic.

At the 28 December 2003 parliamentary election, the party won 84,463 votes or 2.2% of the popular vote and failed to pass the electoral threshold.
