From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Duel is the name given to the emotionally charged lightsaber battle between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader at the climax of Revenge of the Sith, the final installment of the Star Wars film series. It is the longest lightsaber duel to have occurred in any of the six Star Wars films. The event of the Duel had been decided on decades before the film's release, with the basic details being that the fallen Jedi Anakin Skywalker would fight Obi-Wan only to be tradgically disfigured to the point where he would have to wear the cybernetic life-support suit popularised by the original Star Wars trilogy. The injuries sustained by Vader in the Duel at the hands of his former mentor Kenobi are the cause of his quadriplegic condition and his inability to breathe on his own. Ewan McGregor's performance in this sequence was the most praised moment in the course of his participation in the Star Wars movies. His character Obi-Wan, unable to bring himself to kill someone who was his former student and as he put it, brother, instead leaves Anakin's fate "to the will of the Force", as explained in the novelisation of the movie.
Taken in historical context, The Duel also refers to the Hamilton-Burr duel, the encounter between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton which resulted in Hamilton's death.
