- 1880 - The Sussex County hamlet of Lewisville near Laurel was renamed Bethel.
- 1918 - US Food Administrator Herbert Hoover's recent "Keep a Hog" appeal to alleviate food shortages during World War I caused problems in places like Milford. If a pigsty was kept within town limits, it could not be a nuisance.
