- 1782 - Captain Robert Kirkwood, who survived some thirty-three Revolutionary War engagements, left South Carolina to return home to Newark.
- 1868 - The "Middletown Transcript" newspaper began operations with Henry Van Devear and Charles Vanderford as publishers.
- 1947 - Republican Vera G. Davis of Dover became the first woman elected to the state senate.
- 1992 - In what was considered the worst storm to hit the area since the Ash Wednesday Storm of 1962, a nor'easter produced a 9.02 foot tide, the second highest tide ever recorded in Delaware.
