• 1808 - Newport Gap Turnpike, the first in the state, was authorized.

• 1934 - Shellpot Park, an amusement center near the Philadelphia Pike in Wilmington suffered a devastating fire and never reopened.

• 1978 - The DuPont Company sold the News Journal Company to the Gannett Company for $60 million.

• 2003 - "The Lion," a 563-foot empty tanker, temporarily lost power in the C&D Canal. Disaster was averted when the captain anchored the eastbound ship, thus avoiding a collision with the Reedy Point Bridge at Delaware City.
