- 1779 - Jeremiah Dixon, the bachelor who helped determine the boundaries among Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware, died and was buried in the Friends' Burial Ground, Cockfield, County Durham, England.
- 1919 - Wilmington soldiers in the 59th Pioneer Infantry Thomas Davis, Harvey Hadley, Howard Johnson, and John Chandler were killed in a mine explosion in Rehon, France.
- 1935 - Pierre S. du Pont, IV, U.S. Representative (1971-1977) and Governor (1977-1985), was born in Wilmington.
