  • 1792 - The General Assembly changed the name of "Duck Creek Crossroads" to Smyrna.
  • 1866 - Burton N. Harrison, private secretary to President of the Confederacy Jefferson Davis, became the last Rebel prisoner to be released from Fort Delaware.
  • 1945 - Authorities notified Delawareans that cigarettes, hard to get during the war, would soon be rationed at fifteen per day for smokers.
  • 1970 - "The State of Pennsylvania," one of the last Delaware River steamers, foundered in Wilmington's Christina River and laid there for years.
