This category is for companies that were once significant, but are now defunct. Some were driven out of business by competitors. Some simply stopped operation. Some went bankrupt. Some were willingly sold to other companies, or bought in a hostile takeover.

Note that some companies may continue to operate under their old name but as a subsidiary of a parent company.
