Dear Abby is the name of the notable advice column founded in 1956 by Pauline Phillips (born July 4, 1918) under the pen name, Abigail Van Buren, and carried on today by her daughter, Jeanne Phillips, who now owns the legal rights to the pen name.

According to Pauline Phillips, she had come up with the pen name, Abigail Van Buren, by combining the name of the biblical character, Abigail, in the Book of Samuel with the last name of former U.S. President Martin Van Buren.

Dear Abby's syndication company, Universal Press Syndicate, the column is known for its "uncommon common sense and youthful perspective", and is read by more people than any other newspaper column worldwide.[1]
