Değirmendere is a municipal town in Kocaeli of Turkey. Although there are other towns in Turkey under the name of Degirmendere, this particular one is located on the south coast of Izmit Bay. It has different districts named Yuzbasilar, Yukari Degirmendere and Kurucesme. Degirmendere lies between Gölcük and Halidere. Degirmendere was the epicenter of the 1999 Marmara Earthquake, which almost wiped out the town and the neighboring towns.
Degirmendere is well known for its hazelnuts, sweet cherry and public cultural activities. Değirmendere is the home town of many famous musicians such as Bahadir Afkan, Firat Ersecgen, Alparslan Turer, Alpay Sebat. In addition, Cagdas Fatih Aktas is a famous poet from Degirmendere who still resides in this tiny town.
