Dawn Okoro

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dawn Okoro (born in 1980, in Houston,Texas), is an American Contemporary painter and activist. Generally self-taught, Okoro has been creating art for most of her life; her first solo exhibition was in 2005, mostly showcasing art she produced while laid up with a broken ankle the previous year.

In 1998 she won three Golden Keys and the American Visions Honor in the Scholastic Art Awards. By age 18, her art was displayed in the Texas State Capitol building. After earning her B.A. degree at the University of Texas, Dawn worked for the Texas Department of Human Services as a social worker.

Fueled by the frustration of watching her younger brother struggle with autism, Dawn decided to use her art to help children with developmental disabilities. A portion of the proceeds from Dawn’s first solo exhibition “Muse,” were donated to Thoughtful House Center for Children.

In 2005, Okoro gained the attention of multiple Grammy winner Erykah Badu. Okoro collaborates with Badu's nonprofit charity B.L.I.N.D. to hold artshow/fundraisers.
