Talk:David Levy Yulee
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Didn't Yulee deny he was Jewish during his political career, claiming his background as "Moroccan"?
-
- Yes, he did downplay his history as a Jewish person during his career. Moreover, he stopped being Jewish in 1846 and was baptized an Anglican. I have changed the article 65.28.2.218 15:29, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

"black descent"? 132.241.246.111 21:01, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- Yulee wasn't of black descent. I've changed this accordingly. 65.64.100.44 21:07, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Yulee's religion
Yulee was never baptized. See C.S. Monaco Moses Levy of Florida: Jewish Utopian and Antebellum Reformer (LSU Press, 2005), p.4
"Although never baptized, he [Yulee] became estranged from Judaism and married a devout Presbyterian."
Also, David L. Yulee's (aka, "David Levy") first political campaign was noted for a degree of anti-Semitism. Thus, the statement "although never admitting publicly that he had been Jewish until the end of his political career" becomes rather absurd. His very Jewishness was a prime factor in the campaign.
