David Talbot is a character in The Vampire Chronicles. He is Superior General of the secret organization the Talamasca, which researches and investigates the supernatural. He is a prominent figure that connects Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and Mayfair Witches series of books.
David is an elderly man, unlike the screen depiction of him in the film version of The Queen of the Damned. In the book version, he met both Lestat and Louis, after the events of Queen of the Damned. Lestat taunted David, offering him the blood, which David soundly refused. In The Tale of the Body Thief, it seems he and Lestat had a friendship. After Lestat tried to end his immortal life by flying into the sun in the Gobi desert, he visited David. It was also David he went to when Raglan James offered to switch bodies with him, though he didn't listen to what David had to say. It was David that helped Lestat regain his body. In a twist, in the struggle with Raglan James, David switched bodies and ended up in a much younger body, described as a tall Indian body with chestnut hair, while Lestat returned to his preternatural body. This was unknown to Lestat however, and there was a resulting incident, in which Lestat killed David's old body which was possessed by James. In the end of the book, Lestat forced the blood upon David, making him his fledgling.
David became somewhat of a confidant to the Vampire Armand, and would eventually record Armand's story of his life. He is also described as having sexual preferences for young women and men, preferring men in The Tale of the Body Thief. David also appears in Merrick, where he contacts his old friend in the Talamasca, Merrick, who also happens to be part of the Mayfairs. In this book Merrick raises the spirit of Claudia for Louis. At the end it is revealed that Merrick had been using Voodoo to bring both David and Louis to her in order for her to get what she wanted, eternal life. This plan worked as Louis did give her the blood, making her immortal. However, after he changed Merrick, he tried to commit suicide by placing his coffin in the open where he would be burned to death when the sun rose. He nearly succeeded, but he was too old for the sun to end his life. David, Merrick, and Lestat found him and gave him their blood in order to heal his burnt form. Their combined blood made Louis stronger than he had been before. The four then formed a coven in New Orleans, but the Talamasca, enraged that two of their members had taken the blood, threatened the vampires and demanded that Merrick be returned to them. Lestat wanted to retaliate against the Talamasca, but David talked Lestat out of doing anything rash, and the four left their home in the Rue Royal.
