David Papaleo (born January 21, 1970) is a competitive bodybuilder, fitness model and personal trainer who is mostly known as the pornographic actor named Tom Katt . He gained fame as an American male pornographic actor. He starred in numerous pornographic movies and posed in gay porn magazines. He worked in both gay and bisexual pornography. In a February 2006 interview with Dallas Voice, he talked about his retirement from making adult movies, his recent marriage and his conversion to Christianity [1].

David Papaleo was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1970 where he spent the first four years of his life in suburban Atlanta. He was raised by his parents with two other children. At the age of four, his parents divorced and they all moved to Ludlow, Massachusetts where she became involved with and later married Donald L. Tatro. During this time, David's life became very problematic. His mother suffered from depression and at the age of eleven his stepfather, Donald Tatro shot and killed his mother. He was never prosecuted, more than likely due to the fact that he was a part-time cop with the Ludlow Police Department. Afterwards, Papaleo moved back to Atlanta to live with his father. Papaleo was a very emotionally unstable teenager as a result of his mother's death and was a loner who often had violent anger outbursts. At school he joined the wrestling team, but he often found himself in trouble due to his lack of desire to be part of a group. David discovered bodybuilding at sixteen and his body soon began to develop. Bodybuilding became a form of therapy for David and helped him deal with the loss of his mother. Soon after starting bodybuilding, he entered his first contest and placed 3rd. After graduating in 1988 he dreamt of becoming a professional bodybuilder.
After graduation, David worked odd jobs and did personal training on the side to support his goal in becoming a professional bodybuilder. At this time, his body had developed considerably and a friend of a friend noticed his development and got him his first offer to appear in an adult movie from Fox Studios, an erotic company that specialized in the genre of bodybuilders. He agreed to be a part of this studio and signed a contract. According to Papaleo, he mainly agreed to do this because of all the money he could earn by doing adult films. David Papaleo took the alias of Tom Katt and at twenty-one, appeared in his first adult film. He continued to compete regularly during this time and contested in at least three shows a year. He also did personal training on the side and enjoyed a successful career as a personal trainer. After he won his first regional bodybuilding competition, he was able to demand more money from his clients. His career as a pornographic actor also flourished and as he became more popular, his wages increased. During this time David would begin to date men and women that were also involved in the pornographic industry.
David would continue to make movies with Falcon Studios and to do personal training in Georgia until the selling of adult videos became legal in the state. An adult video shop opened near the gym where he worked and pictures, videos and other things were clearly seen in the window of the store. Whilst this did not embarrass him personally, it cost him in lost clients and friends from the gym. This, along with other issues led to Papaleo suffering a lot of emotional problems regarding his self image. David landed on hard times and began to move from place to place. From 1997 to 2003, he moved to Los Angeles and then back to Georgia and then went back to Hollywood. He also began to take steroids and other performance enhancers to compete, something that he never had done before. David would later say that taking steroids hurt his competitive career by making him too bulky and asymmetrical, which hurt his placings. At 255 pounds, he never won a single competition while he took them.
His sexuality also suffered during this time. Papaleo never identified his sexual orientation before he entered the adult movie industry. For a long time he identified himself as Bisexual and dated a number of men and women. For some time he stayed away from dating women as he felt that no woman would be interested in dating a gay porn star or bisexual man. During this time he tried two relationships with men. These relationships were more sexual in nature than spiritual or emotional which according to David, was the main reason why they didn't last. Around this time, Dave began spending large amounts of money on all sorts of drugs and alcohol to deal with his emotional issues. He began to pray and read the bible in the hope that this would help him. It did. Papaleo was able to overcome his drug problem and find peace with himself. In 2003 David decided to retire Tom Katt from the adult film industry in order to cultivate his spirituality. He moved back to Georgia, met a woman whom he told his story to and decided to continue the relationship. They got married in December 2005.
As of 2005, Dave returned to bodybuilding as a drug-free competitor. His return to bodybuilding was also successful as he won his class at the NPC South Eastern Gold's Gym Classic and NPC Georgia Championships. Dave and his wife have moved to Florida where he continues to study the bible. He remains supportive of the gay community and is very verbal about the negative messages that the church is sending about the gay community. He now runs a personal training business in Florida and plans to continue to compete in bodybuilding.
