[edit] Early life
Maust was deeply troubled as a child and was confined in a mental institution at the age of nine [1]. There, he was sexually abused for many years. [2]
[edit] Murders
He has been suspected or charged for at least nine murders, including: one in Germany while he was in the United States Army; two (including a stabbing) in Texas in the early 1980s; three in Illinois after being released from prison in 1999 following his supervision period in 2003; and three in Hammond, Indiana, where he was caught after the remains of the three victims' bodies were found under concrete in a residential basement. He has been considered mentally unfit to stand trial on multiple occasions.
[edit] Death
Maust died at St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point, Indiana, 27 hours after a suicide attempt.
