David Allen Zubik (born September 4, 1949) was appointed the Bishop of Pittsburgh on July 18, 2007. His appointment by Pope Benedict XVI ended the fourteen month vacancy in the diocese left by Donald Wuerl, who became the Archbishop of Washington in June of 2006. Bishop Zubik was ordained a priest in the diocese of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 3, 1975.

[edit] Early life

Born in the working-class steel town of Ambridge, sixteen miles northwest of Pittsburgh along the Ohio River, Zubik attended St. Stanislaus Parish, St. Stanislaus Grade School, St. Veronica High School (Ambridge), Pittsburgh's St. Paul Seminary, and Duquesne University before heading to Baltimore, Maryland's Saint Mary's Seminary and University, Roland Park, from which he was ordained in 1975. After serving in various parishes, and earning a Master's in Educational Administration from Duquesne, he became administrative secretary to then-Bishop Anthony Bevilacqua in 1987, continuing in the post when then-Bishop Donald Wuerl arrived the following year. In 1991, Wuerl appointed him Vicar for Clergy and five years later, after a brief period as chancellor, he became vicar-general and General Secretary.

[edit] Auxiliary Bishop of Pittsburgh

On February 18, 1997, His Holiness Pope John Paul II appointed him as the auxiliary bishop of Pittsburgh. On February 18 of the same year, he was appointed titular bishop of Jamestown and ordained a bishop on April 6, 1997. He served as a spiritual director at Saint Vincent Seminary in Latrobe as well as having his diocesan duties.

[edit] Bishop of Green Bay

On October 10, 2003, he was appointed to succeed the Most Reverend Robert Banks as Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Green Bay (Green Bay, Wisconsin) as Bishop Banks had reached the retirement age of 75 and had resigned from his office. Bishop Zubik was then installed on December 12, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, of the same year. Since becoming Bishop of the Diocese of Green Bay, it has been noted that vocations for the diocese have increased.

[edit] Bishop of Pittsburgh

On 18 July 2007 Pope Benedict XVI appointed Zubik as the Bishop of Pittsburgh. He received the call of appointment from the chargé d'affaires at the office of Pietro Sambi at 3.35pm [the exact time of his birth] on Monday 9 July.

Some believe that part of the reason for his appointment was the vocation question,[citation needed]which is particularly crucial to Pittsburgh's outlook as a declining number of priests has resulted in pastors now being split between multiple parishes, and a religious sister was installed as the diocese's first "parish life collaborator" in mid-July 2007. The appointment also adds further evidence to the reports that, especially in cases of prominent posts, Benedict is more inclined to give near-decisive weight to the leanings of the office's prior occupant.[citation needed] He was installed on 28 September 2007.

[edit] Quotes

  • Commenting on his appointment to Pittsburgh he said: “I was truly honored to serve the wonderful people of Green Bay. Green Bay became my new home. Now Pittsburgh is my home again. I love the Church of Pittsburgh. I love being a part of the presbyterate of Pittsburgh once again. I love the people of Pittsburgh. It is a wonderful church – very much alive in Christ."
  • While Archbishop Wuerl said:"I rejoice with the news of this appointment. I am very pleased for what it will mean to the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Bishop Zubik knows, loves and has served the Church of Pittsburgh, and has walked with it through all of its many moments of challenge and development for the past 20 years. My prayer is that God will bless him and his ministry and of course the Church of Pittsburgh."
