David Andrew Hansen (Born November 24, 1968) in Long Beach, California, is a former Major League Baseball player, specializing as a pinch hitter.
Hansen played for four different ballclubs during his career: the Los Angeles Dodgers (1990-1996, 1999-2002), Chicago Cubs (1997), Hanshin Tigers of Japan (1998), San Diego Padres (2003-2004), and Seattle Mariners (2004-2005). He made his Major League Baseball debut on September 16, 1990.
On April 10, 1997, Hansen broke up a no-hitter at Wrigley Field that was being thrown by the Florida Marlins' Alex Fernandez with a one-out pinch single in the ninth inning. The Chicago Tribune called Hansen's hit a "wicked one-out one-hopper." In 2000, Hansen set a record with seven pinch-hit home runs, with the Pittsburgh Pirates' Craig Wilson tying Hansen's record the following year. In 2005, Hansen told Baseball Digest magazine that he describes pinch-hitting not as a position, not as a role, but "a state of mind."
Hansen retired after the 2005 season after failing to sign a contract with any major league team.
As of 2006, Hansen ranks sixth all-time in Major League Baseball career pinch hits with 138 [1].
Hansen was the hitting coach for the Mobile BayBears, the Arizona Diamondbacks Double-A affiliate in 2007. On September 26, 2007, Hansen was named the Diamondbacks minor league hitting coordinator.
