[edit] Playing career
Gatherum played just three games for the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL. However, he is mostly remembered as being a reliable goaltender in juniors, the minor leagues and later in some Senior Hockey Leagues. He won the Stanley Cup in 1954 with the Detroit Red Wings. He played 3 games while filling in for an injured Terry Sawchuk, recording two wins and a tie.
Gatherum played junior hockey with the local Hurricanes of the TBJHL. He then spent three years bouncing between the QHL, AHL, WHL and Detroit. When he tired of the grand tour associated with the minor pro lifestyle, Gatherum joined the Kelowna Packers of the Okanagan Senior League in British Columbia. He was a "workhorse" there for four seasons before retiring in 1959.
