Materials:
2 straws 2 bamboo skewers 1 Balloon 2 lids 1 cardboard box 1 pair of scissors 1 hot glue gun 1 roll of tape 1 egg
Challenge 1:
Attempt to get a jet propelled car to travel 5 meters without breaking the "cargo" (an egg).
Challenge 1 Results:
The vehicle appeared to be a bit too heavy, for it didn't move at all. Because of this, a distance and an average speed couldn't be recorded. The egg didn't suffer a single scratch because it stayed in the same place as when it started. However, it appeared to be just on the line of movement, for all it required was a small tap to get it to start moving (although it moved only barely a noticeable distance).
Challenge 2:
Attempt to get a jet propelled car to travel 2 meters into a wall, without breaking the "cargo" (again).
Challenge 2 Results:
Unfortunately the car couldn't be fixed up enough before this trial, so it fared the same way as it did during the first trial. The car would refuse to move, and the egg was fine because, once again, it didn't move at all. Once again, the problem could've been the weight of the vehicle, or the fact that it was using smaller wheels which weren't meant to be used on the vehicle.
ERRORS / Solutions:
The vehicle was a bit too heavy to move with only the propulsion, however a light tap would move it fine. The larger, heavier wheels were replaced by smaller, lighter wheels. The vehicle body was glued (accidentally) to one of the wheels. Salvaged as much of the machine as possible, and started over. The vehicle body would flip around when the vehicle moved. Two rods were made in the front to prevent it from moving when heading forwards. Backwards motion still flipped the machine. The wheels were impossible to cut through with classroom materials, thus there was no way to make them lighter. Replaced the wheels altogether with lighter ones. The vehicle still wouldn't budge, even after all of the modifications stated above. There was no solution, the time had run out, however, stated on the following lines tells of how it could've been solved if there was enough time.
Modifications:
In order for a better racer to have been made, there are quite a few things that may have been done to keep the craft light enough to move. One of these would be to cut holes in the body and the old tires, possibly large enough holes to cut down the weight by enough to get the craft going. If it were possible, the pipe connecting the balloon to the vehicle could've been widened to let more air out in a shorter time, creating possibly enough force to move the craft. The aerodynamics of the vehicle were also not so good, considering how it was mainly a box shape, which could be solved by bending the front side inwards, creating a ramp. The last thing that could've been done was to actually work in a group, instead of individually, to get more work done faster.
