[edit] Not fired

Although William Regal played by Darren Matthews lost his match versus the Green Bay loudmouth, Mr. Kennedy it was never clear what he had lost. Before the match the screen personality Mr. McMahon said if Kennedy lost the match he would be fired however the threat to Regal was presumed. Mr. Kennedy asked for the match to determine who the real King of the Ring was after Regal had won it a few weeks earlier. It's worth noting it was not an 'offial' 'I quit match'. Presumably he lost the match due to the fact he had breached a rule in his contract but similar to Jeff Hardy in the fact he had to drop his title which in Matthew's case was the general manager role. Matthew's could have lost three things: 1.BEING AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE WWE ROSTER. 2. LOSING HIS GENERAL MANAGER ROLE. 3. LOSING HIS KING OF THE RING TITLE. Although prior to him being suspended it was noted Regal was going to focus more on wrestling. It could be pure coincidence that the next day he was banned for breaching his contract. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.104.51.181 (talk) 20:12, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Face or Heel

In some parts of this article Regal is announced as a heel but sometimes he's announced as a face. I think he is a bit like John Cena really they both make jokes yet the crowd still find a reason to berate them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.104.51.181 (talk) 20:09, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Also in England??????

"The left-handed Matthews made his ring debut wrestling in carnivals on the piers of Blackpool at the age of fifteen. He also wrestled professionally in England, where he regularly teamed with Robbie Brookside, before going to the United States in 1992."

Which would suggest that Blackpool isn't in England.

I believe it would suggest more wrestling in carnivals isn't professional wrestling. RealFerrari 12:44, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Arm trap neckbreaker

Regal/Matthews has never used this as a finisher. To whoever keeps bolding it; stop it unless you can cite a source where he actually has. Thank you.

Wrong. Regal finished a match with the neckbreaker at No Mercy 2000. See http://www.furiousrage.com/cgi-bin/furious.pl?article=WWE%202000/No%20Mercy%202000. Please stop vandalising this page. McPhail 23:03, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Height/weight

How come metric is first in his profile? Imperial is still the primary weight/height measurement in the U.K.(Halbared 17:58, 26 May 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Pic

get RID of that picture, its terrible. What was wrong with his book cover pic? 12:36 EST User:Dubbya9

[edit] Eye Tattoo?

Where did you find that Regal has a tattoo on his left eye? I haven't heard anyhting abou this. Please verify.MgHoneyBee 05:08, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Missing information

What happened to the bit about his "little" wardrobe malfunction? That is important information as it might have an affect on his career.

[edit] Penis

It must be mentioned in the article.205.188.116.11 05:21, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

It needs to be mentioned but in a secondary article such as "criticism" and should be mentioned solely on the grounds as it may have an affect on his career. Comments on his "size" are unneeded(but funny).

OK, so how about someone makes a William Regal penis controversy entry?

205.188.116.11 04:20, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

No need for its own article, no need for its own section. Wikipedia is not a crytal ball. --Jtalledo (talk) 20:38, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

does anyone have a pic as that would help keep it from getting deleted and stop with size vandalization jokes. 205.188.116.11 04:20, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Confirmation of facts

Most of the facts regarding Regal come from his book, such as his sleep apnea and his accent. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 62.252.216.37 (talk) 22:07, 8 December 2006 (UTC).

[edit] Middle name

Darren's middle name is Kenneth after the comedian Ken Dodd, NOT Nathaniel. Uk66usa93 06:17, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Who is it that's keeps changing the middle name from Kenneth? Where Nathaniel ever came from I have no idea but it HAS NEVER been his middle name. Please get your facts correct and please say why you keep changing it and why you think Nathaniel is his middle name.I know Darren personally. Uk66usa93 04:59, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

The claim that you know him personally makes your contribution both a conflict of interest and original research. - Deep Shadow 05:12, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Redirected?

Why is the title of this page his real name and directed from William Regal? He is known as William Regal and that name is cited throughout the article. I refer you to the page on Linda Lovelace (for example) to show that the stage name is used in wiki as opposed to the person's real or birth name. Naysie 14:23, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

If you have the real name, then that is what biography should be titled. Govvy 16:04, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

For anyone who uses mutliple names, whether aliases or stages, all those names redirect to the single person (by birth name).Smobro68 09:17, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Rating

I put the rating for this entry as "Start" - some may disagree but I felt that Regal's career up until he rejoined the WWE is just too short and cursory to make this a "B" level article. MPJ-DK 09:01, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Nationality

Matthews is indeed British, but the flag designated as his country's flag is only the Flag of St. George and not the full "Union Jack" flag.Smobro68 09:15, 8 March 2007 (UTC) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Smobro68 (talkcontribs) 09:11, 8 March 2007 (UTC).

That's the England flag, a British flag is different yes, but the flag states he is England which is far more specific. Govvy 09:44, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

If the rules are to place nation flags, the nation is the UK< and the flag for that is the Union Flag.Halbared 09:48, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
He is English, British, you can use both flags. But dominantly in sports the UK divides it'self up between the countries. For instance Finlay is from Northern Island which is part of Britian, but you are using the NI flag for him. Govvy 09:53, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
If the rule is for nation states, then the ention is UK. If that is the rule. NI is not part of Britain, it is a member of the UK. Finley does have dual citizenship however, so both UK and Eire flags could be used.Halbared 10:03, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Lets see, There is no Britian flag, there is the UK flag and other flags which make out the UK flag. Govvy 10:06, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

btw, Britian is the name of the island which holds, England, Scotland and Wales, UK stands for United Kingdom which consists of Northern Island and a load of other Island's also. Govvy 10:11, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

The flag of the UK is known as the British flag. The Britisdh flag is the Union Flag (known as the Union Jack when hoisted on a ship) Great Britain being the dominant area. UK stands for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The flags making up the Union GFlag being those of England, Scotland and Ulster.Halbared 10:19, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
How is this for a compromise? I've stuck the Union Flag next to his name at the top of the infobox and put the St. George's next to his place of birth, being as he is a British citizen but born in England. Suriel1981 21:04, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Billed From

If you look at William Regal's profile on WWE.com you will clearly see, Blackpool, England. So can you please stop removing the England part from the infobox in the Billed from header. Thank You. Govvy 09:46, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

He is billed from "England" because WWE is an American company. By the same token, all American wrestlers performing in Japan or Europe would be billed from "America". McPhail 14:01, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
like, what are you on? You obviously don't get it, waste of my time trying to correct you. I have had enough of you. You really don't explain yourself very well and frankly I am now finding your actions offensive and completely wrong. Govvy 15:57, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Redirect to "William Regal"?

I dunno. He's been called that for so long it's not even funny. It'd be nearly a decade now that he's been performing under that name.

Anybody else think so? Ma-Mutt 15:47, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

I disagree completely, biographies should be titled by the real person's name. He is playing William Regal as a character, yet you don't see actors changing their names to their characters name! Govvy 15:58, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Disagree as Matthews achieved national (in the UK) and international recognition under name Steven Regal. As he's been well-known under two different names I would say it is more appropriate to use his real name at present. This isn't a case like Steve Borden who has achieved notability entirely under the name Sting. ŞůṜīΣϹ98¹Speak 17:26, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

From what I know, Govvy, by the standards of the pro wrestling project, you title the articles with the stage name that they're best known by. Even if this weren't a pro wrestling article, just look at, say, Vin Diesel. His real name ain't Vin Diesel. But it's a pseudonym everybody knows; why not put it in the name of his article.

All that said, I see what you're saying, Suriel--I hadn't considered his WCW tenure, either. Ma-Mutt 21:59, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

This is a biography of Darren Matthews, no matter what he does he will always be Darren Matthews. William Regal is a character played by Darren Matthews, he hasn't changed his real name at all. Also if you look down the bottom of the article there is one book listed. Unfortunately for me he has written it under his pseudonym name. But if you just have William Regal forward here then there should be no problem at all!! And also how are you to know he isn't going to do things under his real name? I prefer to be proper and stick to a standard which is more correct! Govvy 10:42, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

WP:NAME would say William Regal or Steven Regal wins out (ring names in general over real names is directed by WP:NAME). I do recall, however, that in this case, there is a strong argument against as he is cited by both real and ring names in past works (in fact, it may have even been the same work - have to check my sources). Furthermore, the ring names have frequently been combined - both William Steven Regal and Steven William Regal have been used. Some would argue that William has a WWE bias (he has not used the name anywhere but WWE, from what the article states) when arguably his greatest successes in the ring was when he was known as Steven, while some would argue that he was a better out-of-ring entertainer (as a "upper-crust" heel or counterbalancing-face authority figure) as William. kelvSYC 06:23, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Incorrect name spelling?

According to his OWoW profile, his last name is spelled "Mathews". There needs to be more sources to confirm the correct spelling of his name. Although, his OWoW profile may be inaccurate. - Deep Shadow 17:14, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

The correct spelling is Matthews with 2 T's. Reference his book.Uk66usa93 06:18, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Edit of Raw and Smackdown sections

These parts of this article are rather long given the timeframe they encompass and consist of very heavy week-by-week analysis, which could be summarised more succinctly. I'm inclined to give it a severe editing unless people can provide some good reasons why it needs to stay quite so detailed. --Dave. 21:53, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Regal's Brass Knuckles

He didn't start to use them in 2002. I remember when he was using them a year earlier. I was at a SmackDown! taping in Bakersfield, CA back in December of 2001 when he used them in his tag-team match with Kurt Angle and he accidentally knocked out Kurt Angle with the knucks. That same mentioning is visible in one of his old entrance videos, which is in the WrestleMania X8 video game for Nintendo GameCube. Danny Dangerous 04:17, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Alliance Commish?

Why isn't he listed as being the Alliance Commishioner in then accomplishments? You have him listed only as a WWF Commish, where WWE.com as him listed as commish for both the WWE and the Alliance. SAH-DennyCrane 07:27, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Pic

Does anyone think the pic should be him with the microphone as he is the general manager of Raw instead of him holding Chuck Palumbo in a submission? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.138.143.10 (talk) 06:54, August 21, 2007 (UTC)

Yes I do —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.222.32.144 (talk) 00:32, August 22, 2007 (UTC)

[edit] English flag

I've changed the flag to the English one - Regal is English and deserves to have the Cross of St George(The English flag) as his emblem. The British flag encompasses 3 other constituent countries and is more an umbrella term and symbol these days. See Jonny Storm, Jody Fleisch, Doug Williams, Paul Birchall, Dave Taylor etc etc.87.127.178.28 19:19, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Regal Knee Strike?

On a few episodes of Velocity (probably during his time with Burchill or right afterwards) his finisher was called something like the Knee Tumbler. Anyone else remember this?

Max Nardi 23:26, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Don't just link folks.

I have cleaned up Wrestlers Trained By so that any that don't have articles don't have links. EG. Jade just links to the stone mineral, not to a person and there is no article for the professional wrestler using that name. Madslocodemente 03:28, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Opening sentence is a mess

"Darren Kenneth Matthews (born May 10, 1968), better known by his ring name William Regal, Mathews was born in Blackpool but Moved to Newbury, UK where he went to St Barts school for 5 years.[citation needed] After that he moved to Sheperds Bush London[citation needed] to start a career as an English professional wrestler."

Seriously - is all that necessary? At least two things aren't referenced. Move it to the early history/career part. 87.127.178.28 (talk) 20:47, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Picture

Somebody really needs to change this picture. Bam123456789 (talk) 20:35, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Image:William-Regal-Entrance,-RLA-Melb-10.11.2007.jpg What about this. Bam123456789 (talk) 20:39, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

The current picture has a much clearer view of his face. Gavyn Sykes (talk) 22:02, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Age

According to an interview on the Sun that Darren Matthews just did, he is not 42, but rather 39 closing in on 40. [1] Nightmare SE (talk) 18:28, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Name

Should the article's name be changed to William Regal?

RandySavageFTW (talk) 21:13, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Anyone?

RandySavageFTW (talk) 20:39, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Bring this up at WT:PW, maybe people'll respond. ♥NiciVampireHeart♥ 16:08, 19 May 2008 (UTC) Never mind, you already did. ♥NiciVampireHeart♥ 16:09, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
I don't think it should be moved. He competed as Lord Steven Regal for a long time and gained fame under the name. For people with multiple well-known ring names, the consensus at WP:PW has been to stick with real names. GaryColemanFan (talk) 17:06, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Coverage links

Removed a link to the WWE's coverage for RAW in regards to the May 19th match because this is not a link to a static page, the page dynamically changes each week. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Robblatt (talk • contribs) 13:59, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Name change

[edit] Darren Matthews

Resolved.

Should the article's name be changed to William Regal? No one replied on its talk page.

RandySavageFTW (talk) 03:54, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

There is a large section at the top of the page discussing multiple moves it should probabally be moved there. --76.66.181.154 (talk) 05:12, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
He has also been known as Stephen Regal and Stephen William Regal and Lord Regal. And he has published a book as Darren Matthews. Darrenhusted (talk) 08:53, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

And Lord Steven Regal. But William Regal is his best known name.

RandySavageFTW (talk) 17:46, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Oppose Again he is very well known in England by his real name, The article shows his has hand multiple in-ring names and by all purposes you should stick to his real then when this happens. Govvy (talk) 18:02, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Oppose Gained fame under the ring name Lord Steven Regal and held the WCW Television Championship four times under this name. Too well-known as Lord Steven to claim that William is better known. GaryColemanFan (talk) 18:11, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Just to note: William Regal has over 300,000 more Google results than Darren Matthews. And Lord Steven Regal has more than both.

RandySavageFTW (talk) 18:14, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Google does things by webbots scrolling websites for names, it will count the number of times it finds the name and the number of websites doesn't come into that equation. I would suggest not to depend of google for a hit hit count and just use common sense. Govvy (talk) 19:58, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Oh, and he's won the European Championship four times as well under the name William Regal. There's also King of the Ring, Tag Titles, etc.

RandySavageFTW (talk) 18:16, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Oppose for reasons stated above, he has written a book under the name Darren Matthews, so we are in the same boat as Edge, and which stage name would you pick, he has won championships under different names. Darrenhusted (talk) 13:26, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Oppose - Per above and his title wins as Stephen Regal. --Endless Dan 14:52, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Oppose - WWE.com refers to him as Matthews out of kayfabe here and now is probably not the best time to do it. D.M.N. (talk) 16:32, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Oppose per GaryColemanFan. ♥NiciVampireHeart♥ 19:12, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
