I'm not sure, and I don't have my volumes on me to check, but I'm sure that Daiki told Daisuke that he wanted to steal something for Menou in the manga. Was this just a change in the TOKYOPOP translation? Or was it something else?

It was an heirloom in the anime. Daiki stole it himself in the manga. (I'm only referring to the English translations here, not the original Japanese.)
