[edit] History
Darwin and Cat both attended Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ. Darwin met Cat while she was working in a tattoo shop where he went to get his nipples pierced. She disinfected them, and the two began their friendship. In mid 2000 Cat moved back to Los Angeles and the two maintained minimal contact, finally losing touch altogether. In 2005 Cat moved to Vermont and was hired as a weekend and swing shift DJ at WEQX where Darwin had worked for the previous year as the night show host. Reunited as friends, Cat pressured Darwin to record a demo for a morning show. They began a weekly podcast which boasted an estimated 10,000 subscribers by episode 11. The week of episode 14 they announced that Pamal Broadcasting had hired them to host the morning show on WZMR, their newly launched station with “The Edge” moniker. [1] [2]
==Show Segments==[3]
- Name That Disorder Darwin and Cat read symptoms for some non-serious disorder and leave it up to the listener to call and guess what the disorder is. If they figure it out, they are rewarded with “a really crappy prize” such as an action figure of Jane Austen, Angel Snot, or a wind up nun that shoots sparks out her mouth.
- Ask The Beaver - A segment that airs on Thursdays. Cat reads emails from listeners asking for advice on relationships, sex, and occasional oddball topics.
- Voicemails From The Park Masturbator – Cat receives an excess of emails and voicemails from a fellow employee asking inappropriate questions. Darwin and Cat replay them on the air and have listeners call in to guess what the “Park Masturbator” wants to know. The term was a nickname Cat gave to the individual who harasses her. The identity of the person has never been revealed on air.
- Deaf Movie Review – Early in the show’s development, Darwin was approached by a woman who wanted to begin a career as a film critic. It was revealed in her interview that she was deaf. Darwin and Cat, seeing a chance to energize their own movie reporting, hired Jennifer Plovnik to provide weekly reviews.
- Today’s Headlines - A segment that airs at 6:20, and a second installment at 9:10. The audience is presented with three news headlines that are all “weird news”. Out of the three one is a fake, and it is up to listeners to decipher which is the phony.
- Sh!t That Darwin’s Mom Buys Off TV - A product Darwin’s mother has purchased on TV is put to the test by either Intern Mel or traffic reporter Regin, usually with a humorous result.
- Darwin and Cat’s Drunk Dial This segment, which appears to be on hiatus, presents audio of a drunk talking about the previous night. Listeners who can decipher the alcoholic ramblings win free cellular products.
- Washington Park Idol Introduced for the spring 2008 season of American Idol, this is a segment where various characters compete to remain in downtown Albany's Washington Park. When the losers are voted out of the park by the listeners, they must also surrender their helmet. Originally called "Short Bus Idol," the segment was renamed, as station management felt it might possibly be insulting to the disabled.
[edit] Other Segments
From time to time, the show will present XXX or a Fourth Grader. Examples have been Jewel or a Fourth Grader and President Bush or a Fourth Grader. “Let's Cook Fish” is a segment where the pair tries to cook fish in a coffee maker, heating duct, engine block, or other bizarre heat source. Recently they have played “Meaner Than a Texan,” challenging listeners to “out insult” a Texan. "The Stuttering Eight Ball" periodically comes up to determine if listeners win tickets or other prizes. Also, from time to time, Darwin and Cat play “Will It Blend,” in which the tickets to a concert end up in the blender if the listener cannot correctly answer trivia questions about the band.[4]
[edit] F.U.B.A.R.
On Saturday mornings Darwin and Cat host a four hour new music show called FUBAR that also features covers of popular Edge songs, live tracks, 90’s alternative, and “best of” segments from the previous week’s Darwin and Cat Radio Show. Initially the show was pre-recorded but as of November 2007 the show is live. [5]
[edit] Wife Swap
The show will be featured on ABC TV on the March 5th 2008 episode of Wife Swap. The show is episode 76 of the series and swaps Cat with Mrs. McGoldrick, a conservative owner of a pet crematorium. [6] [7]
[edit] Charity Work
The Darwin and Cat Radio Show undertook their very first major charity event in December 2007. The duo lived in an RV for two weeks in various Price Chopper parking lots. Their goal was to fill the RV with food donations to deliver to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. After a two week stay with no heat at times, Darwin and Cat delivered the RV to the food bank, where they weighed in over two and half tons of food plus over $3,000 in cash donations. The regional food bank reported to the media that this was in fact the largest donation by far of their 25-year history. [8][9]
