[edit] Adjacent counties

Darke County, Ohio, is one of the few counties in the United States to border as many as 8 counties. Ohio has another such county: Stark County (whose neighboring counties are all within Ohio). If not for a narrow slip of Mercer County that reaches to Shelby County that also separates Darke County from Auglaize County (despite not actually sharing a border with each other, the two counties actually touch at a single point), Darke County would border 9 counties, which would make it part of an even rarer class of counties.
