Dargeçit
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dargeçit is a district of Mardin Province of Turkey, is also known as Kerburan, traditionally a Syriac town. It had approximately 300 Syriac families in 1900. After the "Seyfo" in 1916, many Syriacs were killed. It was inhabited by the Syriac Aramaic Christians, Kurds and Armenians. But from 1979 most of the Christians fled the city, after the murder of Andreas Demir Lahdik, the Mayor of Kerburan at the time.
It has the Syriac Orthodox church of Mor Kuriyakos, which is now left in ruins despite numerous attempts by the Christian people from this village, whom are now abroad, to restore and maintain their church.
