Daniël Dennis de Wit (born 10 June 1982, Assen, The Netherlands) is a visual artist, art critic and curator. He studied at Minerva art academy, Groningen. These professions he summarizes under the term of Cultural Engineering. His work derives from the tradition of conceptual art, but has a strong emphasis on 'context'. Investigations on the secondary conditions for creating art, and how these themselves are or could be art are the main focus of the work and thinking methods used by Daniël Dennis de Wit. His works shows a critical reflection on art (historic) dogma's as well as social thinking patterns. The ideas, forms and sometimes materials De Wit uses are mostly related to the specific place and situation the work is shown in. Some consider Daniël Dennis de Wit to be a post-modern contextualist. He refuses however to be pinned down to anything; "I don't like opinions, not even my own.";is just one of the Contradictory statements he made about his work.
Common reccuring media and techniques De Wit uses are: photography, video, installations, painting, internet and net art, performances, interventions and writings. His work often theorizes on how people attempt to hold on to a certain perspective for a stable and sustainable image of reality, and ironicly fail because of that attempt.
Another important aspect of De Wit's work is the denunciation of the Romantic notion of Genius in the art field. Other recurring subjects in his work are: randomness, the (over)accumulation of images in contemporary society, defaitism in art and society, and the trilateral relationship between context, content and form. Supposedly he makes a lot of references to (conceptual) artists and philosophers.
De Wit is co-founder of the Medium Gallery, an independent exhibition space located in the staircase of a residential house in Groningen, The Netherlands.
