Dom Mariani is an Australian rock musician and Songwriter, best known for his bands The Stems, The Someloves, DM3 and Dom Mariani and the Majestic Kelp.

Mariani was the son of Italian migrants, who settled in the port city of Fremantle, Western Australia. He has a brother Laurie

The very first band I played in was kind of garage-cabaret to play school socials. This old guy Wally Harland had the Fremantle Guitar Studio just near the National Hotel and he was teaching me and a couple of the other guys that were in the band. We linked up with Robbie Scorer who’s playing drums with me now and we were playing everything from ‘Pride Of Erran’ to ‘Good Golly Miss Molly’. We called ourselves IMPACT and started out as an instrumental group actually doing instrumental versions of the current hits. Wally had his own cabaret band and we’d be like special feature guests, these young guys coming in and playing three or four songs. I remember playing Creedence’s ‘Down On The Corner’ at my very first gig. I knew it note for note but then when I got to play it nerves kicked in and I didn’t play ‘Down On The Corner’ that’s for sure!! We eventually got some microphones and we started singing Creedence, Beatles and Bee Gees tunes.[1]

[edit] The Stems (1983-1987)

Main article: The Stems

The Stems formed in late 1983 with Dom Mariani (guitar), Richard Lane (guitar), Gary Chambers (drums) and John Shuttleworth (bass). The band's debut gig was supporting The Saints and The Triffids in Perth. The Stems built up a substantial following in Perth, during this time they replaced Shuttleworth with Julian Matthews.

Late in 1984 they recorded three songs, "She's A Monster", "Make You Mine" and a version of "Tears Me in Two". A friend of the band who wanted to help manage them told them he would take the tapes to the east coast and shop them around to the independent labels there. There was quite a bit of interest expressed by a number of labels, but the Stems chose Citadel because of the high quality of their releases at the time. In mid 1985 the band went to Sydney to meet up with their new label Citadel and promote their first single "Make You Mine"/"She's A Monster". The single reached the top of the independent charts and also sold 500 copies in England. The single was to be the 2nd highest selling independent single for Australia in 1985. During this period they recorded "Tears Me In Two" and the Love Will Grow EP both produced by Rob Younger of the legendary Radio Birdman. The EP reached #1 in the national charts.

In 1986 the band, with a new drummer, David Shaw, signed with Mushroom Records proceeded to record their debut album with producer Alan Thorne. The recording process didn’t go smoothly and a new producer brought in to complete the record. At First Sight, Violets Are Blue was released in 1987, on the White label (a Mushroom Records subsidary). The album debuted at Number 1 on the Australian alternative charts and became the third top best selling Australian album of that year. 1987 also saw the band embark on another national tour, with appearances on national television – the lead single "At First Sight" making the Young Einstein soundtrack.

In October 1987, on the eve of a six week European tour the band disbanded, with their last perfomance on August 31, 1987, although the official announcement wasn't made until November 1997

[edit] DM3 (1992-1999)

Fronted by singer/ guitarist Dom Mariani (formerly of The Stems) DM3 got their start in 1992 with the accompaniment of bassist Toni Italiano and drummer Pascal Bartolone. Bringing out their own brand of power-pop to the town of Perth, Australia, DM3 debuted with their first single "Foolish" in 1993 before following it with their first full-length album 1 Time, 2 Times, 3 Red Light in 1994. After a European tour in support of these two releases, DM3's second album Road to Rome came out in 1996 before Bomp Records hooked up a "best of" compilation in support of the band 1997 US tour entitled Dig It The Most. With the 5 Greasy Pieces EP released that same year courtesy of Citadel Records, another compilation of b-sides and out takes entitled Garage Sale saw the light of day in 1998.

In 2002 they released their debut album Turn On for Baty's Off The Hip label, with two 7" singles following closely behind for French and Spanish labels respectively. Shortly afterwards McDonald left to pursue a solo career at which point Dom Mariani stepped in. This new lineup recorded the Stoneage Hearts' 2004 album Guilty as Sin, again for Off The Hip Records but also an American release appeared on the Bomp Records subsidiary label Alive Records on green vinyl LP and CD.
