Didn't the economic decline started before the abolition of slavery in 1848 and was consequential on the development of sugar beet growing in Europe. See entry for St Croix. Harry Potter
- According to the wiki article, the Danish west Indies (or the US Virgin Islands) opted for American annexation in favor of the US economic might instead of the British (they have the western half known as the British Virgin Islands), French, Dutch, Prussians (Germans) and Swedes whom also showed interest in acquiring the Virgin Islands in the 19th century. The Danish cultural imprint on the Virgin Islands was minimal due to higher numbers of Anglo-French (France and Belgium) and Dutch settlement. + 71.102.53.48 (talk) 11:34, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Several websites agree that slavery ended on July 3 but some sites say 1846 while others say 1848. Which is correct? Rmhermen 04:26, May 18, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Denmark-Norway
The name of the colonialist-country was until 1814 Denmark-Norway, and the fleet (used in the slave-transportation, f.ex.) was highly Norwegian.
I agree, the fleet was for the most part norwegians. The realm of Denmark-Norway existed until 1814, and quite a lot of prominent figures in the colonies were in actuality norwegians. I would propose that the article should read Dano-norwegian colonization of the Americas. --SWA 17:46, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
- I disagree. First the article includes the time period after the Norwegian involvement. Secondly Denmark and Danish are commonly used terms to refer to the entire history including the period of Denmark-Norway. Rmhermen 17:59, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

- Danish East India Company had a few scattered colonies along the Indian coastline and shown interest in the East Indies or the present-day country of Indonesia with little or no success due to the Dutch and Portuguese stood in the way. The Russians hired experienced Danes to explore the Russian Far East and entered the Bering Sea in the 18th century, but Denmark hadn't annexed any land nor created any colonies, it went to the Russian Empire.
There was a historic rumor about in the late 18th century, the Danish and Swedish kingdoms each wanted to claim much of North America the area we now call Central Canada and the Midwestern/Central United States north of the Ohio River and west of the Mississippi, but north of Kansas and west of the Rocky Mountains. In 1868, the islanders voted to sell the colony to the United States but their offer was rebuffed.
