Talk:Daniel Jackson
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Daniel is a brilliant Archaeologist and a linguist who speaks 23 languages."
...Although his German is very poor. --wwoods 22:11, 25 Apr 2004 (UTC)
-in which episode is he speaking german? -- fuchsi 17:43, 11 Nov 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, why DOES the page say "MORE than 23 languages" if it's clearly stated that he speaks 23 exactly? Does something contradict this or embellish it later in the series? Does he learn more languages later in the series? (If he had spoken this in the movie prior to going to Abydos he'd probably qualify for at least one more, but it was a later episode, right?) Oh, and his Russian isn't so hot, either, if the transcript I just read got it right.
This is why citations are so nice to have, the whole issue of "mandatory Wikipedia policy" aside. :) I'm tagging this fact and if nobody can find a source for it we'll eventually remove it. Bryan 00:52, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
Well, in the episode "200", Hammond says that he needs someone "who can say 'guts and glory' in 27 different langauges." Since the whole episode is a comedy one and this is a puppet version of Hammond talking, I have no idea if this is to be literally taken or not. Thunderforge 05:14, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
In 1969, Daniel states he can read and write 23 different languages, but since then he's probably learned more in the run of the seriesNo Way Back 19:08, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ascension storyline
I suppose someone will correct me if by some inexplicable chance it really is possible to turn into an Ancient. But. Does anyone know the proper way to write about ascension? Seems like it might be the sort of thing folks capitalize, as in Ascend, Ascension, Ascended Person, whatever. I missed important parts of that storyline, and it's not like you ever see it in print.
On an unrelated subject that should probably have it's own headline, wouldn't it be proper to refer to Daniel's wife under her movie name when talking about events during the movie? Or, if that would be too confusing, some note should be made of the change. Though I don't know if it's pronounced differently, even spelling differences are worth mention in a written medium.

- Ancient is a race, not something someone who isn't of that race can turn into, but the Ancients all ascended, which other races can do, the ascended form was not the original form of the Ancients (I could be wrong about this, I don't have a good memory, but I am very much certain that this is true) 68.250.185.77 02:08, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Replicator Carter
Should this be replaced with Replicarter? If not then the link should at least be changed to that page - Zarboki 15:49, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Non permanent deaths
I am going to start a "non and semi-permanent deaths of Daniel Jackson" section.
It's a pretty crazy phenomenon that is referenced on episode pages.
- In the episode "The serpents lair" or the serpents grasp, can't remember- Daniel is dragged away by somebody off camera. I assumed that they put him in the sarcophagus, whoever they were. I don't think he climbed, he looked pretty dead. Seriously guys, first in that episode he was left for dead and was dragged into a sarcophagus by persons unknown- I know this doesn't make any sense, but I remember it happening. Then the ship he was on blew up. I think that's pretty much two deaths in one episode. Lotusduck 20:44, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
-
- "Serpent's Lair." Just popped the DVD in. Daniel gets shot at 29:50, Jack leaves him behind at 30:38, and at 31:00 we get a several-second shot of him laboriously crawling along the floor using one arm (the other having been crippled by the staff weapon blast) but definitely moving under his own power. We don't see him again until 35:15, when a sarcophagus opens to reveal him fully healed. There's no evidence anyone helped him there. Oddly enough his clothing is completely repaired too - including, it seems, his radio (I can't quite tell for sure when I freeze the frames showing his injury earlier but there certainly seems to be just burnt meat showing where the radio's stowed after he gets out later). That's one sophisticated medical device. :) Bryan 00:55, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] 23 languages
Ok, I added the reference. It was in "1969" when they were contimplating hitchiking, Daniel says to Jack "I speak 23 different languages, pick one" in reference to them asking Katherine regarding where the stargate was without interference. Faris b 02:29, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Trivia
I've removed the Trivia section, it reads more like justification for Carter/Jackson 'ship than interesting information. I don't like the use of 'some fans' either No Way Back 03:09, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] POV
And I quote: "Daniel is a brilliant archaeologist...". This is clearly a point of view. I know it sounds insignificant, petty and stupid, but I have a job to do. I shall get around to NPOVing and copyeditting this article myself within a week (but most likely within an hour).
Your one true god is David P. A. Hunter, esq. III Let us to it, Pell-Mell If not to heaven, then hand-in-hand to hell Hail OneCone International! 01:05, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
He's been addressed as such numerous times within the show, and the discoveries he's made certainly earn him the title, but I do understand your point, billiance is rather subjective. How 'bout we just change it to "Daniel is a knowledgable and respected archaeologist," or something along those lines. JBK405 01:08, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
Knowledgeble maybe, but he isn't respected. Last time he wrote a paper he was laughed out of academia for he crazy 'Pyramids are landing pads' theory. No Way Back 14:50, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Actually, he never did propose that the pyramids were landing pads for alien ships (At least not before he learned of the Stargate). What he did say was that they weren't built by the Egyptians of the 4'th dynasty, he never did say who he though they really were built by, it was critical members of the academic community who started saying he thought aliens were involved.
Anyway, I'll grant that back in 1994/1996 he was laughingstock, but his theories have since been validated and, though it's not yet common knowledge, those academics who know of his research practically idolize the guy. He's respected by those who have all the facts, and that really should count for more than 10 year old opinins by people who are completely in the dark. JBK405 19:51, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Does Daniel die in "Window of Opportunity"?
I recently watched the episode "Window of Opportunity" and noticed that right before Malakai turns on the time-looping device for the first time, he shoots Daniel so that he doesn't interfere. Daniel falls over and collapses. Sam check's Daniel's vital signs and looks at O'Neill and Teal'c with a concerned look on her face, but doesn't say anything. Then the time-loop starts for the first time and Daniel is alive again. It seems to me like Malakai killed Daniel, but he came back to life because time was repeating itself and so Daniel would never have died. So, should this instance be added to the list of Daniel's deaths? Thunderforge 05:11, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- I agree it's a possibility. Perhaps we should just note that he *may* have died, without any real confirmation one way or the other. --Bark 00:00, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
-
- Okay, I don't want to start an edit war here. At Bark's suggestion, I added this info with the text: "May have been killed when Malikai shot him in "Window of Opportunity"". This was immediately deleted by the user CovenantD who believed it was speculation. So should it be included or not? Malikai's weapon obviously stunned or killed Daniel, and by stating he "may have been killed", it at least acknowledges one of two possibilities. What do you all think? Thunderforge 02:25, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

-
- Personally, I'd just leave it. The footage in WoO is inconclusive at best, and it's not like there aren't plenty of examples of Daniel's death anyway. It might be different if we were struggling to find events where Dsniel has been killed, but the fact we have plenty of instances tells me we can omit this one mention. - I think I should point out that, when Daniel said the device wouldn't bring his wife back, Malakai told Daniel that he was "living proof," implying the device did bring Daniel back from the dead. 67.171.163.212 02:13, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] ATA?
Does anyone know if and how Daniel has the ATA gene? I have seen him use Ancient tech, but that doesn't guarantee that he has the gene. Konman72 04:32, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- It's implied that he doesn't have the gene in "It's Good to Be King" because they needed to call Jack to get the time machine to function. If Daniel had the gene, he could have done it himself. --Bark 13:32, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- According to Repository of the Ancients, Daniel doesn't have the gene. However, the article is a bit unclear as to whether or not the Repository needs an ancient-gene capable person. The way I see it, it's kind of up in the air. Besides, I think Daniel would want the gene therapy, so he may have tried that. Thunderforge 02:14, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
I removed that part from the RotA article because it's never been stated one way or the other and to assume is conjecture, but I personally believe that he does not have the gene (Mainly because, as Bark said, he would have been able to fly the Jumper on his own). JBK405 04:26, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Birthday?
If Daniel was born on 8 July 1965, wouldn't it be sort of a stretch to say he was 4½ around 15 August 1969? One of those has to be a goof; the events of "1969" would have been only five weeks after his birthday. JCub 07:06, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Aspergers Syndrome
Am I the only one who think Daniel Jackson has a mild case of Aspergers? Just the way he kind of goes when he explains scientific things, it reminds me of how someone with Aspergers would do it. It would also help explain his 1337 linguist skills among other things. He always seems a bit socially awkward to me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 143.239.1.153 (talk) 12:24, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
- Can you find a reliable source that describes it? If not, it's original research, which can't be included. =David(talk)(contribs) 18:15, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
Good pick up. Asbergers is definitely plausible in terms of his ability to achieve three doctorates but I'm not convinced that Michael Shanks Jackson is a candidate in the same way that Spader's was, who was more of a typical of an autistic person. You If you're interested in more, I'd recommend you read "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time" by Mark Haddon, its a credible depiction of a child with Asbergers.

[edit] PHONOLOGY/PHILOLOGY
I made a mistake a couple of months ago when I edited Dr Jackson's quals. I had in good faith made a correction thinking his third doctorate was in Phonology. Having got my DVDs back from a friend and listening to the quote again, it has become apparent I was wrong ;) That said, I had to listen to it about a dozen times... i HEARD phonology every second or third time (lol) but Shen Xiaoyi does say Philology... So to the anonymous IP address who reverted my edit- good work ( and good ear there as well!)

[edit] SPOILERS
Can people PLEASE take the time to label a section that contains spoilers! Continuum isn't even out yet. For the first time, I'm going to swear in a wikipedia page. Its not f*&king good enough and I'm extremely pi$*ed off! This isn't a fan page, so don't speculate on movies. Nobody cares if you have a scoop, you just spoilt it. If your underdeveloped ego dictactes that you know something rest of us don't then PLEASE, use the word SPOILER for Godsake. Proberton (talk) 06:29, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- I just deleted the section on continuum because it is purely speculative (the film isn't going to be out for another 2 months) and whoever added that section should be ashamed of themselves because he or she has just completely ruined my day. Matthew R Dunn (talk) 14:28, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
