Dad's Root Beer is an American root beer created in Chicago in 1937 by Jules Klapman. It is currently produced by The Dad's Root Beer Company, a division of Hedinger Brands, LLC. [1]

For years, Dad's Root Beer was a Chicago staple, and behind it was eccentric businessman Jules Klapman. Mr. Klapman transformed Dad's Root Beer Co. from a small bottling enterprise, owned by his father Ely Klapman and partner Barney Berns, into a multi-national firm. Father and son changed the company name to Dad's to honor Mr. Klapman's grandfather, who made root beer at home.
Dad's became the first product to use the six-pack format invented by the Atlanta Paper Company in the 1940s. Dad's also introduced the half-gallon bottle, becoming the first brand to market this size. Dad's also marketed sizes based on each member of the family. "Junior size," for example, was the smallest size. (The image of the young boy featured on the "junior sized" bottle is Barney Berns' son, Gene Berns)

In 2007, The Dad's Root Beer Company, LLC of Jasper, Indiana was formed by parent company Hedinger Brands when it acquired the Dad's Root Beer brand. Other soda pop brands owned by The Dad's Root Beer Company are Bubble Up, Dr. Wells and Sun Crest.

The company's signs on the Edens Expy. (I-94) and a memorable one near Lake Shore Drive that asked "Have you had it lately?" became fixtures on the Chicago landscape. The double meaning of the slogan was obvious and avant-garde for the times.
The product's jingle was a simple line sung several times, to a conga beat, with the "kick" coming on "Beer":
