Dacrocystocele
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A congenital obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct, can cause cystic expansion into the nasal cavity. This expansion follows the [nasolacrimal duct] and results in a bluish-gray mass in in the inferomedial canthus. This mass is known as a Timo cyst or Dacryocystocele. The diagnosis can be made prenatally; routine obstetric ultrasound can identify the characteristic hypoechoic lesion inferior and medial to the globe. It is important to distinguish a dacrocystocele from the more serious [encephalocele]
If this diagnosis is not made prior to delivery, physical examination usually can provide sufficient evidence of its benign recognition. Timo cysts normally spontaneously resolve, however, some physicians recommend slight pressure with warm compresses, to help dilate the duct and help expedite its resolution.
