D.J. Grothe

Douglas James "D.J." Grothe (born June 25, 1973 in St. Louis, Missouri) is a writer and public speaker who talks about issues at the nexus of science, critical thinking, secularism, religion and the paranormal. He is Vice President and Director of Outreach Programs at the Center for Inquiry, a "think tank that advances science, reason and secular values in public affairs."[1] He is associate editor of Free Inquiry magazine, and lectures throughout North America at colleges and universities. He edited On the Beauty of Science,[2] about the worldview and life's work of Nobel Laureate Herbert Hauptman. He is currently writing a book about secularism and public debate titled Arguing for America: How Secularists Can Win The Culture War. He hosts the nationally popular radio show and podcast Point of Inquiry which features leading thinkers in the sciences, skepticism and humanism. He is a former professional magician and "psychic entertainer."

He first got involved with the Center for Inquiry through one of its organizations, the Council for Secular Humanism, while in graduate school at Washington University in St Louis.[3] He was involved in a student freethought group there called WULF, the Washington University League of Freethinkers.

Started in 2005, Point of Inquiry is consistently ranked in the top of science podcasts.[4] It has been widely celebrated for its guests, and for Grothe's expert and challenging interviews.

He lectures about the intersection of magic and skepticism,[5] having been involved with both movements and enterprises for years: he was a professional magician who did shows for corporations.[6]
