This page documents the tornadoes and tornado outbreaks of 2000, primarily (but not entirely) in the United States. Most tornadoes form in the U.S., although some events may take place internationally, particularly in parts of neighboring southern Canada during the Northern Hemisphere's summer season. Some tornadoes also take place in Europe, e. g. in the United Kingdom or in Germany.

There were 16 tornadoes confirmed in the US in January.

On January 3, an early and violent outbreak took place across the Southern United States. Three F3 tornadoes touchded down, two in Kentucky, and another in Mississippi. At 4:06 pm (CST), an F3 tornado touched down in Rome, Kentucky and quickly moved into the Owensboro area. There, the tornado grew to half a mile in diameter and packed winds of up to 180mph. The tornado tore through the densly populated residential and commercial areas damaging 1200 homes and businesses. Of the 1200 buildings damaged, 101 were destroyed and 573 sustained major damage. Amazingly, no one was killed and only 18 people were injured. Owensboro was declared a federal disaster area due to the devestation from the tornado. The tornado left $64 million in damages.

A localized tornado event took place on January 9. Three tornadoes touched down in Alabama, one of which was an F1 which struck Dixons Mills. Two mobile homes were destroyed as well as numerous trees being uprooted.
Damages from the tornadoes totaled to $520,000.

A rare Northwest Pacific tornado touched down in Dayton, Washington. The tornado traveled for about a mile before lifting off the ground. The second story of a barn was damaged and a mobile home was rolled over.

A deadly tornado outbreak took place between February 13 and 14. 18 people were killed in Georgia, 11 of which were from one tornado and hundreds of others were injured. This outbreak was the deadliest of the year and the deadliest between June of 1999 and October of 2002.
Damages from the tornadoes totaled to $32.173 million.

An isolated F0 tornado touched down in Miami-Dade County in Florida around 2:15 (EST). The tornado briefly touched down without causing any damage.
Later in the day, five F0 tornadoes touched down in Texas. One of the tornadoes tracked about 12 miles through Bell County knocking down power poles and blew down an awning from a home leaving $15000 in damages.

A rare F0 tornado touched down near San Juan, Puerto Rico along the Caguas Highway. The tornado traveled for only 0.2 miles before lifting leaving no damage behind.

A small outbreak ocurred in the Southern U.S. between February 24 and 26. 11 tornadoes were confirmed across 4 states. The strongest was a high-end F1 tornado which touched down in Lipscomb County, Texas on the 24 where trees were uprooted and fences were blown down three miles east of Follett. The tornado also damaged roof tops, outbuildings, water wind mills, and one tractor cab along with several power line poles. The tornado then tracked into Oklahoma where several outbuildings were destroyed. The tornado had a total path length of 23 miles and left $590,000 in damages. Another strong F1 touched down the next day in Hickory County, Missouri. The tornado struck the Skyline Elementary School where most of the bus maintenance buildings were either blown away or collapsed. Two nearby homes also suffered some damage and numerous outbuildings were destroyed.
Damages from the tornadoes totaled to $1.252 million.

An F1 tornado briefly touched down in Dawson County, Texas on March 2. Tornado was confirmed due to a video of the funnel passing through a field.
The next day, a brief F0 tornado touched down in Greene County, Mississippi. The tornado damaged only one mobile home along its 6 mile track which was almost entirely through trees.
Damages from the tornadoes totaled to $12,000.

On March 7, 7 tornadoes were confirmed across Kansas and Oklahoma with three of them being rated F1. An F1 tornado struck the town of Liberal, Kansas around 4:20pm (CST). The tornado destroyed several sheds, and uprooted trees. 1/3 of the hospitals rood was also blown off and the KDOT tower was blown down.
The next day, only one tornado was confirmed but it proved to be very destructive. The F1 tornado struck Milwaukee, Wisconsin at around 6:10pm (CST). 19 people were injured by the tornado, all of which were in their cars when the tornado struck. The tornado caused major damage to 19 homes and businesses as well as minor damages to 53 other homes. The tornado was estimated to have packed winds of 100-110mph. The tornado was also the earliest tornado Milwaukee has ever recorded (just before sunset). The tornado tracked a total of 16 miles before lifting.
Damages from the tornadoes totaled to $4.83 million.

On March 10, 12 tornadoes were confirmed across three states with one of them being rated F3. The F3 tornado struck Harmony, Texas around 7:55pm (CST) and caused significant tree damage. By 8:22pm, the tornado reached the Pin Oak Subdivision. There, 7 trailers, including a double-wide, were destroyed and 10 other homes sustained major damage. Shortly after passing through the subdivision, the tornado grew to a half-mile in diameter and reached F3 status. One and destroyed a ranch on the south side of FM 1361. Several outbuildings that had been bolted down were also destroyed in this area. In all, the tornado only injured two people and caused $1 million in damages.
Damges from the tornadoes totaled to $1.866 million.

A small tornado outbreak ocurred between March 14 and 16. 17 tornadoes were confirmed of which two were rated F2. A very destructive F2 touched down in Houma, Louisiana around 1:57pm (CST). Though the tornado was only 40 yards in diameter at its widest, it plowed through the densly populated residential and commercial areas of Houma. The tornado damaged 212 buildings with damage from lost shingles, to roofs being torn off. 50 of the structures suffered severe losses due to the tornado. 36 people were injured by the tornado and it left $10 million in damages behind it on its short, 3 mile path.

Two brief tornadoes touched down in Montgomery County, Alabama on March 19. One was rated as an F1, the other an F0. Both tornadoes only caused minor roof damages.

A small tornado outbreak ocurred between March 22 and 25. 25 tornadoes touched down across three states. 20 of the tornadoes were rated F0, 4 were rated F1 and one was rated F2. The F2 tornado touched down in Reagan County, Texas on March 22. It tracked through mostly rural areas but knocked a small home off its foundations and destroyed a mobile home. 5 people were injured by the tornado including an infant.
Damages from the tornadoes totaled to $681,000.
