I have always been fascinated with coincidences... and hurricanes. I found a way to fuse the two. Enjoy...

[edit] Miscellaneous coincidences
- The 1977 Atlantic hurricane season, the 1977 Pacific hurricane season, and the 1977 Pacific typhoon season were all very inactive with no known cause.
- Every storm in the 1958 season formed from a tropical wave that came off the coast of Africa.
- The first storm in 1881 formed on August 1st. The date read 8-1-1881
- In 1977 there was a Hurricane Babe in the Atlantic and a Typhoon Babe in the West Pacific active at the same time.
- Hurricane Isidore in 1990 formed at a record low latitude. Hurricane Isidore in 1996 was the second lowest. Hurricane Isidore in 2002 also formed at a slightly lower-than-normal latitude.
- Hurricane Able of 1950 passed within 100 miles of Cape Hatteras as a major hurricane, as did Huricane Able of 1951.
- Every hurricane that was named Able affected the Carolinas in some way.
[edit] The Greta, Irene, and Olivia Coincidence
The East-pacific Hurricanes named Olivia in 1971 and 1978 and their alter-egos Greta and Irene have some amazing coincidences themselves.
- Both Hurricane Olivia's came from Atlantic hurricanes; Greta and Irene.
- Both Greta and Irene were tropical depressions in the Lesser Antilles.
- Greta was a Major hurricane that became a minor hurricane as Olivia, and Irene was a minor hurricane that became a major hurricane as Olivia.
- Both crossed into the East-pacific on September 20.
[edit] Two or more Category 5's forming near the same area in one season
Atlantic basin only.
- Hurricanes Carla, and Hattie both formed in the Southeastern Carribean, just north of Panama in the 1961 Atlantic hurricane season.
- Hurricanes Katrina and Rita were two Category 5's that formed over the Bahamas in the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season.
[edit] Numerical Coincidences
This is my personal favorite.
[edit] Hurricane Jeanne and the number 3
-
- 3rd hurricane to make landfall in Florida in 2004.
- 3rd major hurricane to make landfall in the United states in 2004.
- Year: 2004. 2004 is divisble by 3
- Month: Septmeber, ninth month, 9 is divisible by 3.
- Made 3 landfalls over all.
- Killed over 3000 people in Haiti.
- Killed 3 in Florida.
- Reached category 3 strength just after 0300 UTC September-26, which it kept for only 3 advisories.
- Only 3 states had deaths attributed to Jeanne.
- Only 3 counties in Florida had deaths attributed to Jeanne.
- This was also the 3rd usage of the name Jeanne in the Atlantic, all 3 were hurricanes.
- Name:6 letters, 6 is divisible by 3. 3 vowels, 3 consanants.
- Windspeed: 105knots, 105 is divisble by 3. 105kts = 120mph. 120 is divisible by 3.
- Pressure: 951mbar, 951 is divisible by 3.
- TPC Advisories: There were 60. 60 is divisble by 3.
- Formed as a depression at 60°W. 60 is divisible by 3.
[edit] The Allisons
Two tropical storms with the name of Allison occured in 1989 and in 2001. There are a lot of coincidences between these two. You could almost say these two are the Lincoln and Kennedy of tropical storms.
[edit] The Storms
- They were both named Allison. (obviously)
- They both formed in June.
- They were the only Tropical Storm Allison's, for the 1995 Allison was a hurricane.
- They both hit Freeport, Texas, moved inland, and looped back around.
- They both later entered the southeastern states.
- They both caused tremendous flooding in Houston.
- '89's Allison caused $.5 billion in damage; '01's Allison caused $5.5 billion in damage.
- Both had winds of about 50mph at landfall.
- Both entered the southeastern states as non-tropical systems; '89 Allison as a non-tropical low, '01 Allison as a Sub-tropical depression/storm.
- Both formed very close to Texas. (It should be noted that '89's Allison formed from the remnants of Hurricane Cosme in the East Pacific.)
- Both were large and disorganized.
- Both came from East Pacific disturbences: (89 Alliosn came from the Hurricane Cosme remnants, the 01 Allison came from a disturbance that entered the Gulf of Mexico from the East Pacific.
- Both lasted unusually long for first storms. The low pressure from either of them lasted over 12 days.
- They were both the weakest storm of each season.(ACE-wise).
[edit] The Storms' Seasons
- The year 1989 had 3 odd numbers and one even number; the year 2001 had three even numbers, one odd.
- Both seasons had storms dissapating in early December.
- Both seasons had at least 1 name retired that season. Three in 2001 & one in 1989.
- The president's name for both years were George Bush.
- Both had an odd number of storms in them; '89 had 11, '01 had 15.
[edit] The 6-Year New England Curse
A very unusual coincidence is the six year New England Curse. It seems for no particular reason that on occasion when a relatively damaging to extremely damaging hurricane strikes the North Eastern States, another one hits there six years later. Here are some 6 year twins. (Majority of research by User:Hurricanehink)
- The Great September Gale of 1815 hit New England. 6 years later, The 1821 Norfolk and Long Island Hurricane struck the area again.
- The infamous Long Island Express of 1938 was shortly followed by the 1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane 6 years later.
- Hurricanes Carol and Edna which threw a 1-2 punch to the northeast in 1954 were followed by the 1960 monster Hurricane Donna.
- Hurricane Gloria, which nearly struck New Yoek City as a category two in 1985, was followed by Hurricane Bob of 1991, of course, 6 years later.
- Hurricane Floyd in 1999 poured over 13 inches of rain in New Jersey, whereas the remnants of Tropical Storm Tammy and Subtropical depression 22 fused with a frontal boundary over New England to create the flooding disaster known simply as the Northeast U.S. flooding of October 2005, 6 years later.
