Cwmafan (Cwmavon in English and sometimes spelt Cwmafon) is a large village in the Afan valley in South Wales. The transliteration of Cwmafan from Welsh to English is River Valley. It is a suburb of Port Talbot and lies within Neath Port Talbot County Borough.

[edit] Geography
The village is roughly 3 miles from the coastal town of Port Talbot. It is surrounded by hills, the biggest being Foel Fynyddau which stands 370m high and lies on the northern edge of the village. The River Afan runs through the village from NE to SW. The area of Ynysygwas lies to the east of the village, Brynbryddan to the West and Pwllyglaw to the North.

The village has an industrial history with metalworking being particularly significant.

The village is also home to several sporting grounds, the most prominent of these being the Welfare Ground, home to Cwmafan RFC who are currently playing in Division Two West[2]. A second rugby pitch along with a football pitch, tennis courts and bowling green are located at Parc-y-Llyn, which is administered by Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council.
