The city of Cumberland, Maryland is the county seat of Allegany County; and a regional business and commercial center for Western Maryland and the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia.

The Allegheny Highlands Trail of Maryland is a scenic 21 mile biking and hiking trail that starts in Pittsburgh and ends at Canal Place in Cumberland, Maryland. From there the trail meets with the historic C&O Canal towpath and continues onto Washington DC. Together, the C&O Canal towpath and the Allegheny Highlands Trails make up a biking and hiking trail that is 315 Mile in total, streching from Pittsburgh to Georgetown, Washington, D.C..

Indian Will was a Native American who lived in a former settlement of the Shawnee Indians at the site of present day Cumberland, Maryland in the 1700s. Will was a local legend in his time, and he is even credited with the original ownership of the present day Wills Creek and Wills Mountain.

  • 05/09/2007: Police alerted to possible bomb threat on 100 block of Utt Street. Pvc plumbing pipe was discovered with a burnt wick in it. The roofer throw the pipe in the lot and called the police. However, after inspection the pipe was determed to not contain explosives.[1]
