Oh, there's no need to call yourself an idiot newbie!! I was just as hapless when I first started because I didn't know what was what. I caused some almightly stir ups (I even created an article on myself, not something you're supposed to do, which got deleted, and boy was I informed of that!) Ask me if you need any help, or, because I'm still learning - even those who've been on this website since 2001 are still learning - I'll ask for you at the help desk ;-). Happy editing and have a good time! Lradrama 15:18, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Tagging of broken redirects

I noticed you have added speedy deletion templates such as {{db-redirnone}} to a couple of non-working redirects. Please add the templates before the "#REDIRECT" part, so that we sysops can see the deletion template. Otherwise the redirect will end up functioning as normal if the target page exists, or only the speedy deletion category will appear which is very confusing. [edit] re merging Yorkshire Amateurs

I have replied on my talk page. Keith D 10:31, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Kanagawa Prefecture

I noticed you are repairing several DAB links to Kanagawa. Please note that although Kanagawa_prefecture ends up at the right page, it is probably a better idea to bypass the redirect, and update the links to Kanagawa Prefecture (capital P; and a space instead of an underscore). Thanks! Neier 10:54, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] policy and how it is made

You asked: Hi there. A quick question for you on notability - you declined to delete a village definition (Adamant, Vermont) as you said all villages (and presumably therefore by extension all towns, cities etc.) are notable in WP. Is this official policy ? Does this also apply to articles on schools, colleges etc. - whilst it's unlikely you could ever accuse someone of 'blatantly advertising' a town, it is possible to write an article about an educational establishment that's phrased in such a way as to attract positive attention. Are all educational establishments also notable, and if not, whats the 'notability criteria' ? CultureDrone 09:24, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Policy in WP is expressed by policy pages and by guidelines, but also to some extent by what gets actually kept and deleted at AfD. Some of the conventions are formalized at WP:OUTCOMES. It's a little like statute law made by the legislature, and case law as made by the courts which applies it. The difference is that there is no formal precedent, and any of the practice can be changed without formalities if there is a practical consensus to do so. But the current practice as defined by what gets deleted: all universities & colleges are notable, and possible all post secondary institutions (that one is still debatable). High schools usually, but some say always. Junior high schools and primary schools--only if notability can be documented.--for what counts, see current AfDs--the basic rule is non-directory information is needed--for example, notable alumni, athletic or academic championships. Major malls and similar shopping centers, but not minor ones--depends on sourcing. All buildings on registers of historic places. Major landmark hotels and apartment houses. All inhabited places. All distinct geographic places. All railroad stations and airports. All numbered state and federal highways and equivs outside the US. All bridges. All ships (not boats). Advertising matters--it is certainly possible to write an article devoted to advertising a resort town--the article gets reduced to the basic information, not deleted. Similarly with colleges, public or private. For schools, they get deleted. (For school articles be careful that you are not basing it on a vandalized version--check the edit history & see if there is a good one) Copyvio also matters. any article mainly copied from a web site that is not public domain will be deleted regardless of subject. For things really important, sometimes the article gets "stubbed"--reduced to the basics. School teams--important college and university teams get articles, high school not. Fraternities, etc: individual chapters do not get articles. The main student association of a college usually gets an article. Important student newspapers get articles. Faculty: full professors at research universities usually get articles--below that rank, only if they meet WP:PROF. At 4yr colleges and below, only if the meet WP:PROF. High school teachers almost never.

All the above is my interpretation of what is the usual case, and i am not infallible, and it goes by the consensus at each individual AfD. I certainly do not mean to imply I actually support all of this, but I accept the consensus. The way to learn is to hang out at Afd. I warn you that it is addictive. [edit] Mr. Dibbs

hello there. you took the

{{us-hiphop-bio-stub}}

off Mr. Dibbs... just wondering if it was because you consider it not to be a stub, or if the stub's been deprecated, or something else? cheers. tomasz. 16:14, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Carl ortega

There's definitely something fishy about that entry, but please don't use a lack of Google hits as a reason for deletion. There are plenty noteworthy topics that don't get Google hits, especially when they're not from the 1990s or later as this subject is. (MacGyverMagic) - 87.211.75.45 18:54, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cottesloe Band Night

You put this article up for deletion, and I can understand why. But let me tell you the reason for creating the article. The article as you said can be perceived as like a press release or in fact like an advertisement. I am the Author and the article was actually for a College Coursework piece. The topic was to create an article that informs, describes and explains, thus my idea to create a wikipedia article. The article was never meant to act as a press release or advertisement, as this wasn't my goal, and I believe if you read the article from the perspective of trying to Inform, describe and explain then your view may be changed. Thanks (Downrock) 15:28, 6 December 2007

[edit] Acroforms

Hi, Could you please provide some rationale for this? Jmgonzalez (talk) 13:52, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

  • I'm unsure about the integration of Acroforms in the PDF article, as the latter is already 28K long. I think it'd make a better read if we split the [[PDF}] article in several chunks. The forms information is one of the parts that can be easily separated. Regards. Jmgonzalez (talk) 21:25, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of Soar Valley F.C.

A tag has been placed on Soar Valley F.C. requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. [edit] Leeds Bridge

Yeah sure, that will probably be better, i didn't realise they already had mentioned it in his article.

[edit] Disambiguation links to redirect pages

... link is supposed to be the actual item, not an alias ...

Actually no. Sometimes links to redirect pages can be clearer. This comes from here:
... a link to a redirect term will sometimes be preferred to a direct link, if the redirect term contains the disambiguation title and the redirect target does not.
Unless I've misunderstood this! However in the case of Spiral staircase I don't think there is any particular advantage either way. MSGJ (talk) 11:34, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] NR

Hello there. I see NR being used all the time in reference to noise reduction in general, for example in digital photography. The Dolby case was new to me :) Cheers, 88.148.206.233 (talk) 23:24, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Ashuganj Upazila

I've declined the speedy tag you placed on Ashuganj Upazila. The reason is:

seems to be about a town (location), not a person, group of people or web content - non-importance isn't a reason for speedy deletion

For your information, עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:18, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Please be careful tagging articles

Regarding the page Trip gabriel‎, which you tagged for speedy deletion on the basis of CSD A7, I wanted you to know that I have removed the speedy deletion tag. This page does not qualify for speedy deletion because the article patently asserts the subjects importance. If you still want the page to be deleted, please use the WP:AFD process. Thanks!--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:10, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Malcolm B.

"Wikistyle" frowns upon Jr. or the II (which explains the shortening to Eratus Corning from the usual Erastus Corning II; the III and IV are similarly frowned upon). I was hammered often on this point of style in this entry.

Granted, Mal Baldrige, Jr. shares his father's name, if not Yale society affiliatiion, but the appropriate "disam" edit clarifies any confusion.

Thanks for your interest in the entry.SLY111 (talk) 19:40, 27 February 2008 (UTC)SLY111

[edit] Back garden

[edit] Re: Editor Requests/Assistance Real v Pseudo Names

From WP:EAR

The manual of style allows for both conventions. Presumably, as most sources will point to the name one performs under then this is the name most readers will know him as. As for defsort that should always be filed under the name of the article. In the WP:MOSBIO one of the examples given is that of Boris Karloff, which gives his real name after his stage name and he has been dead for many years. Hope it answers your question. -- BpEps - t@lk 23:46, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion of Appear offline

Hi, I see you proposed the deletion of Appear offline. Not that I believe the article should stay - I even endorsed your proposal - but note that you didn't warn the creator of the article about your proposal. This is not really required, but it is considered polite to do that. Remember that an article is a work of somebody, and one would not like to have his/her article deleted, despite what WP:OWN says. I've already warned the creator about your porposal, but I don't think there's enough time to "save" the article, anyway. Victor Lopes (talk) 19:57, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Unicode input

Well - it's intended as an encyclopedic description of what input methods are provided by various systems rather than as a "how to" guide per se, if you can think of ways it can be improved in tone etc to better reach that goal, your input is welcome. Also, from a more cynical standpoint, it's meant to be the lesser of two evils vs having "how to type this character" sections in every article about a subject that somehow involves a non-ascii character. --Random832 (contribs) 13:07, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Fair City Characters

cross-posted from WP:EAR, in response to your query there.

Culture drone - you seem to be hitting on some of the fairly persistant differences of opinion here on wikipedia. The answer to that question would very much depend on who you ask. I would (a) make note of the issue on the talk page of the relevent wikiproject(s), (b) use your judgement as to which characters should be merged, and then (c) place {{mergeto}} templates on the articles as needed to generate any discussion. I would then merge as appropriate, and only as it has not been objected to. Hope that helps. Pastordavid (talk) 15:40, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Birdmen

Hello. Thanks for letting me know: I forgot to add the template which puts the little lock in the top right corner. The reason why you don't get any warnings is that the page is only semi-protected: new accounts and anonymous editors cannot edit the article but you can since your account is old enough. Pascal.Tesson (talk) 21:35, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Portal:Contents/Categorical index

Well spotted it had been a format error since March. The template takes input from all the related templates and one of them had been vandalised giving three horizontal screens. It definitely wasn't your browser. Thanks -- EhsanQ (talk) 09:39, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Indian surname categories

Category:Indian family names and Category:Indian surnames are (for some reason) sub-categories of each other... CultureDrone (talk) 11:41, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Politics, religion, caste, region. There really should be a simpler way. South Asia is pobably more diversified than anywhere else on earth. There are 1.2billion people sharing a handful of nations, with modern India at its centre. Thousands of languages, with English being one of the most cross-spoken between all of them.
Surnames, family names, caste names all play a part in a very very rich history. Simplicity can only offend in this circumstance. Let Wikipedia get on and add as many categories (and a few more) to articles about an important part of the world. If they intersect why not? -- EhsanQ (talk) 12:19, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
I certainly didn't mean that your were trying to offend - the names listed under Category:Indian_surnames are Aboriginal names which the people who hold them believe that later people invaded India and created a Sanskrit/Indo European language India. Why Agarwal is there is a puzzle? That is surely a Rajput and Jat from Punjab name.
Category:Indian family names is for "late comers" and will remain the majority category.
I would certainly oppose an cfd in terms on what we know at the moment about linguistics and tribal DNA. Dunno what you want to do, but I would suggest contacting all the main contributors before you did invoke a deletion. -- EhsanQ (talk) 12:42, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Your D-Boy edits

Having reviewed them, they seem fair and I think make the article better. I admittedly AM a fan of D-Boy..I tried to keep it NPOV but I see how the phrase "quantum leap" is non-encyclopedic unless I make it by use of a critic's quote or some such. I think the NYPD redirect came about because there happens to be a cop of the same name of some notoriety. They probably didn't really read the article when they did the redirect. Nice catch..thanks. [edit] Disambiguation pages

Just wanted to let you know - for disambiguation pages, when there is no primary topic, the disambiguation page should be located just at the title, not at "Title (disambiguation)". Not really something many people know, but I figured I'd let you know in case you ran across that in the future. For more information, you can take a look at Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Page_naming_conventions. -- Natalya 15:58, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Rollback

You're more than welcome. Normally I advice editors I've added the right, but in your case I was looking through your contribution history. Are you thinking of going this way ? Pedro :  Chat  09:16, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I did note some stuff on your talk page, and you will need to get some stuff down pat - particularly important stuff includes the WP:CSD criteria (evidenced by good speedy tagging) and informed comments at WP:AFD. I think most of your stuff so far is great, and I'm sure you'd do well with the admin buttons. Not yet, but in the future. Hit me up at any point if you want some help or guidance. [edit] Regarding 46 (album)

Dear CultureDrone, that's quite correct. However, I warned the creator of the page about my proposal, so I believe he was given the opportunity to fill the article with more information. If I just redirect the article, every time the creator clicks 46 (album), he'll be taken to Kino (band), and he may not notice that his article has been redirected, because most of the unexperienced editors of Wikipedia don't know anything about redirects. Anyway, redirecting is not a bad idea, at all. If you believe it's better, you can go ahead and do it. But do warn the creator, or he may get a little confused. Thank you, Victor Lopes (talk) 21:37, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Resection (orientation)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Resection (orientation), and it appears to be very similar to another wikipedia page: Resection. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 08:58, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Chris Huffman

my position within the deletion process was "blank+redirect" but i put it through the deletion process initially because 1) editor consensus prevents angry authord railing at me for deleting his/her hard work and 2) because previously with pages like this (band member pages containing no content not covered on the initial band article) i've had different users/admins with different views; if i redirect the article or csd it, for example, i've had administrators denying the csd or reverting my edits due to their opinion on whether it should/shouldnt be deleted, which is perfectly fine but could be better expressed in an afd discussion than an edit summary. Ironholds 09:44, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, and thanks for the speedy reply! may i ask why the question? Ironholds 09:50, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Ahh ok, fair enough :). I've been around for just under 3 names (previously with a different username) and in some ways i'm still learning the ropes myself (say if i start contributing to a part of wikipedia i dont tend to use), but feel free to ask me any questions/advice/"what would ironholds do?". Ironholds 09:54, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
I have one final one left (coming up in a week or so) and then i'll be editing wikipedia like a motherbot. And lucky you! i'll leave it behind in 2-3 years :S. Knowing fate and all i'll most likely become a teacher and have to deal with it until i'm 60 :P. Ironholds 10:01, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Your Support !vote here was quite well written. I ended up adding to my initial Neutral with what amounts to a response, and thought I'd leave a note citing the fact that I was sort of responding to you. In essence, I can see the concern from the Opposes, though I don't share it. Also, I don't think any Trekkers were offended; most of them ended up at the Star Trek wiki anyway. Best! I've been working on quite a few of those points (mainly a load of fauna redlinks last night, and also my pet project, a big article on a Native American tribe that isn't yet covered) but it's always nice to have them written down for you, and I hadn't considered the admin coaching (I applied a while back, and nobody has yet got back to me, so i'd kind of written it off).
