Culturally relevant teaching

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Culturally relevant teaching and learning is a method of teaching and learning that builds on and values the cultural experiences and knowledge of all participants regardless of whether they are from the dominant culture. Culturally relevant teaching is a pedagogy that empowers students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by using cultural referents to impart knowledge, skills, and attitudes.

According to Ogbu, "A culturally relevant pedagogy must provide a way for students to maintain their cultural identity while succeeding academically".
