The Montauk We Hope Bicycle Tour and Clam Bake
is one of the fastest growing cycling event in the New York metropolitan area. Every year, for the last eight years, on the Saturday after Labor Day, riders participate in the 75 mile ride that travels from Setauket. The 75-mile bike tour travels along the North Shore through wine country to Greenport, where it then heads south across Shelter Island to the South Fork. Riders then proceed to to Hither Hills State Park, where a clambake and barbecue await.
The Route
The tour starts in East Setauket atTRITEC Real Estate's Corporate Headquarters and ends at Hither Hills State Park in Montauk.
The tour heads east on Route 347 (Nesconset Highway) which merges into Route 25A. From 25A you make a left onto Route 48 (Sound Avenue) and continue through the scenic winery's of the North Fork and head for the Shelter Island North Ferry. Follow Route 114 Through Shelter Island to the Shelter Island South Ferry. 114 ends at route 27 in the town of East Hampton. Crossing over route 27 (Montauk Highway) ride past beautiful Hampton's waterfront homes to finally rejoin Montauk Highway and finish at Hither Hills State Park. Bike and Rider Transportation is provided back to Setauket.
History
In 2000, TRITEC Real Estate Company created a fund-raising bike tour, that consisted of 80 riders, to improve the health and well-being of employees and to make a positive contribution to the local community. The primary beneficiary of Montauk We Hope's effort is Hope House Ministries in Port Jefferson, New York. Founded in the spirit of St. Louis De Montfort, Hope House's mission is to provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. Specifically, they are committed to helping young people and families in crisis, pregnant women, mothers and babies in crisis and all other wounded people within our society. Through the assimilation of 6 separate human service facilities that incorporate seven unique programs, Hope House Ministries provides hope, care and compassion to nearly 2,000 individuals in need each month.
