The institution is a self-financed,[3] Christian minority institution.[3] It is run by the CSI Coimbatore Diocese and the current Bishop of the Diocese is the Chairman and Correspondent of the Institution. The institution is approved by the AICTE, New Delhi and affiliated to the Anna University, Chennai. The institution was started in the year 1998.

The current Principal of the Institution is Dr. S. J. Jeyapaulan, who has been the head of the Institution since its conception. The Rt. Rev. M. Dorai is the Chairman and Correspondent of the Institution since he is the current bishop in Coimbatore.[4] The institution is well-recognised by its peers and locals in the surrounding Nilgiris district, although this may be due to the fact that this is the only Engineering institution in the district which is affiliated to the Anna University.

[edit] Academics

The institution offers bachelor's courses in the following streams of Engineering:

The institution is divided among the following four departments:

  1. General Sciences, headed by Prof. A. Kennedy (Department of Physics)
  2. Department of CSE & IT, headed by Dr. S. J. Jeyapaulan (temporarily)
  3. Department of EEE, headed by Mr. Mohankumar
  4. Department of Mechanical Engineering, headed by Prof. T. V. Christy (Vice-Principal)

Each of the departments have their own separate laboratories and classrooms to accommodate the students. Each department also has its own Students' Association, through which various activities of the departments are carried out annually. Technical symposia, Industrial visits, educational trips, guest lectures and special events are few of the activities carried out by the various Students' Associations.

Recently, the graduation ceremony for the fifth batch of students (2002-2006) was held in the college.[5] The event was presided over by the President of SIEMA, C.R. Shanmugasundaram.[5]

[edit] Department of Computer Science and IT

Headed by Prof. col.Rama Krishna Pillai since late 2007, this department has over 300 students. The department maintains 2 full-fledged computer labs, 1 multimedia lab and a recently added 'project' lab. [edit] Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering

Headed by Prof. Surendra , this department has a little over 200 students. The department houses various laboratories which aid the students in completing their requirements as per the Anna University Syllabus. The Electro Quasars is the students' association of the department. They take the responsibility for the various activities of the department, under the guidance of the staff and the leadership of Mr. Mohankumar.

[edit] Department of Mechanical Engineering

Headed by Prof. T. V. Christy since July 2003, this department has nearly 300 students. The Mechanical Engineering Students' Association (MESA) is responsible for the student activities of the department. The annual symposium Mexplore is held every year in the month of January/February.[6] Mexplore '06 was different from the previous editions as it included a variety of guest lectures from notable personalities in the field of Mechanical Engineering and encouraged hardware presentations of self-made projects as opposed to the usual Paper presentations. The event also heralded another milestone with Mr. Devaneyan of the EEE department displayed and demonstrated an electric two-wheeler,[6] which was built completely independently.

[edit] Residential Facilities

The Institution is mainly a residential facility with separate hostels to accommodate the men and women students. A section of the Men's hostel is completely separated from the rest of the structure so as to enable first year students to live without the fear of ragging. Wardens and Asst. Wardens are present for the men and the women, however, the Principal is considered the Chief Warden of the Hostels.

The institution has an elaborate explanation for the logo and emblem, which incorporates many concepts. According to the explanation available on the institutional website,[7] the Alpha and Omega symbolise the nature of God as represented by Christianity. The Omega logo also signifies the electromagnetic field, while a carter pin inside the alpha logo denotes the simple yet vital mechanical device.

[edit] Social Engagement

Under the tutelage of the faculty of the Institution, the students constantly engage in activities which are beneficial to the society.

  • An NSS camp is conducted in one of the neighbouring villages every year. In 2005, the ten day camp was situated in Nedugalcombai, an Irumba tribal village.[8] Such camps involve sanitising, implementing new facilities and structures and also, conducting cultural engagement events and activities for the tribals.[8]
  • The Youth Red Cross wing of the Institution organised an extensive blood donation camp in August of 2004, enlisting the aid of the Coimbatore based K. G. Hospital.[9] The Blood Donation camp was considered a success as it sensitised the students of the Institution toward the need for blood donation. Over 200 students and 25 members of the faculty participated in the event.[9]
  • A Prayer Cell, run completely by the students functions in the College. The student body of the Prayer Cell meets every Saturday after classes are over. The Prayer Cell also conducts annual functions to commemorate its inception, Christmas and a farewell event for the batch of students leaving the Institution that year.
  • A two-day workshop on Examination Reforms was conducted in September, 2005.[10]
