The present population of the town is approximately 15,000. Unemployment now stands at about 20%. With the development of coal mining, the local population increased dramatically: according to the national Census Returns, the population of Crook was 176 in 1811, 538 in 1841, 5,800 in 1861 and 11,098 in 1881.
