Nitra, since it was the metropolis of the Great Moravian Empire, holds an annual festival called Nitra, milá Nitra (Nitra, dear Nitra) in celebration of the city's rich connection with Great Moravia. The festival begins on July 1st and ends on July 5th and includes plays, traditional old Slovak feasts, sword-fighting, displays of artifacts from Great Moravia discovered in Nitra, the coronation of Pribina (a native of Nitra), the coronation of Rastislav, the invitation of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, celebrations in honor of St. Gorazd (a native of Nitra), travels to the Nitra Castle and the St. Svorad Cave on Zobor Mountain, visit to the relics of St. Cyril at Nitra Castle, visit to the Pribina’s Sword and Pribina Statue, the coronation of Svätopluk (a native of Nitra), and reading passages from Old Slovak literature such as "Proglas" (written in Nitra) and "The Life of Constantine."
