Cross-checking is an infraction in ice hockey where a player holds his stick in two hands with no part of the stick touching the ice while Checking an opposing player. This action is potentially dangerous to the recipient as the force of the blow is increased as is the affected surface.
The NHL and IIHF rules penalize this infraction with a minor (2 minutes), double minor (2+2 minutes, served as 2 consecutive penalties), or a 5 minute major (plus automatic Game Misconduct in Europe) or even a Match Penalty if the opponent is injured.
