Crompton is a small community in West Warwick, Rhode Island, USA. Many people from West Warwick refer to it as "Compton" in a jovial manner or "Crapton" in an unfriendly manner. It is named after Samuel Crompton, inventor of the "spinning mule". Crompton along with Richard Arkwright, both English immigrants and textile inventors, established textile mills on the two different branches of the Pawtuxet River and the community surrounding the mills bore the name of the mill owner, hence Crompton and Arkwright. The Crompton mill was known for the manufacture of corduroy. Crompton is home to Old St. Mary Church, the oldest Roman Catholic church building in the state of Rhode Island, built in 1844.
