[edit] The Bernstein Legacy
A Cromer resident by the name of Mrs Sagle Bernstein left a substantial legacy to Cromer Hospital in 2001[2]. The sum was £11.4 million which she left because of the excellent care that her sister had received as a patient at Cromer Hospital. The terms of Mrs Bernstein’s will were that it is to be spent on “improvement of general facilities” and the legacy can only be spent at Cromer Hospital. It is planned that a new Hospital will be built on the site of the present Hospital. The legacy is to be used towards the cost of building and equipping the new Hospital. £500,000 of the legacy has already been spent on an eight-station renal dialysis unit which opened in June 2006[3]. Eventually the dialysis unit will become part of the redeveloped Hospital.
[edit] The New Hospital
A detailed technical feasibility study was undertaken in the late summer of 2006. The study demonstrated that it would be possible to redevelop the existing Hospital site and to relocate existing services into the new Hospital whilst creating minimal disruption to most existing services. The tender for the new Hospital has been won by Mansell of Swaffham which is a subsidurie of Balfour Beatty and planning applications are to be submitted in Spring 2008. It is hoped that work will begin in the Autumn of 2008 with the new Hospital completed by 2010. The Hospital is to be designed by architect David Bissonnet of architects Purcell Miller Tritton
