I don't get it... If the identity thief is clever enough to manage to apply for a loan in your name, how hard would it be for him to "unfreeze" your credit history (while pretending that you're asking for this step) first?? And if he does this, the whole "credit freeze" is a worthless way to stop the identity thief, right? Or what am I missing? 192.114.107.4 07:58, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

From what I understand, the credit bureaus issue you a pin that enables you to unlock the account temporarily. It's just another factor of authentication. Unlike SSNs, these pins should be known by only you and the credit bureaus. --Matt 11:58, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
