Steven Craig Armstrong (born May 23, 1975 South Shields, England), usually known as Craig Armstrong, is an English footballer playing for Cheltenham Town.
[edit] Career
Armstrong started his career at Nottingham Forest in 1992, graduating from their academy. He played 24 matches at the City Ground and stayed at the club for six years. Lack of first team action meant he moved to Burnley on a temporary loan deal two years in to his Forest career, he played four times at Burnley but moved back to Forest.
Consequently, Armstrong decided to drop a level to get recognized better and moved to Bristol Rovers on another loan deal, again making four appearances. However, he was recalled a month later to play a further nine matches at Twerton Park. Next up, Gillingham took Armstrong on loan. He played 13 matches as a defensive midfielder for the Kent club. He then moved to Watford a year later, but his loan deal was cut short through injury.
However, when Armstrong recovered, Watford took him on loan for a second time with a view to a transfer but this did not come about. He finally left Forest in 1999 when Huddersfield Town agreed a £750,000 move. He played 112 matches at Huddersfield before a £100,000 move to Sheffield Wednesday who were in the Football League Championship at the time. He played 29 times before moving on loan to Grimsby Town in a bid to regain match fitness after suffering a terrible injury. When his contract expired at Sheffield Wednesday, Armstrong found himself without a club until a year later when he signed a short term contract at Bradford City, where he played only four games.
In mid 2005 he signed for Cheltenham Town, for whom he played 76 times and helped the club gain promotion against former club Grimsby. Although he arrived at the club as a midfielder, he made the majority of his appearances at left-back due to Jamie Victory's long-term injury problems. He also operated effectively in the centre of midfield on occasions and was comfortable at centre half. Before his contract ran out at end of the 2006–07 season.[1]
Armstrong rejoined Gillingham in June 2007 on a two-year contract.[2] He made his debut on the first day of the season against Cheltenham, but was on the wrong end of a 1–0 defeat. On January 31, 2008 he was released from his contract.[3] He rejoined Cheltenham Town on 4 February 2008 until the end of the season.[4]
