Cowes Floating Bridge
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cowes Floating Bridge is a vehicular chain ferry which crosses the River Medina on the Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England. The ferry crosses the tidal river from East Cowes to West Cowes.
The ferry is owned and operated by the Isle of Wight Council. The current ferry boat, named No. 5, was built in 1975 and can carry up to 20 cars.[1]
As of May 24, 2006 onwards, the one-way fare for a car, van, tractor, or motorcycle was set at £1.40. Foot passengers and cyclists may cross for free.[2]
The first floating bridge between East Cowes and West Cowes was established in 1859 and is one of the few remaining that has not been replaced by a physical bridge.
