Cooper Ornithological Society

The Cooper Ornithological Society (COS) was founded in 1893 in California. Its name commemorates Dr James G. Cooper, an early California naturalist. It publishes the ornithological journal The Condor, as well as the monograph series Studies in Avian Biology. It makes the annual Loye and Alden Miller Research Award, which is given for lifetime achievement in ornithological research. The aims of the COS are the:
- scientific study of birds
- dissemination of ornithological knowledge through publications, meetings, and direct communication among ornithologists
- encouragement and spread of interest in the study of birds
- conservation of birds and wildlife in general[1]
